Allen Edmonds Sizing Help

I received my first pair of Allen Edmonds today (my first 'real' shoes). I chose the Vernon in black. Using the sizing guide on the AE website I determined I was a 9E. However, the shoe has a slight heel slip and is really tight by the outside toes, arch seems ok, if anything could be moved up a tad.

Should I send them back for an 8.5EEE?

The EEE might make the heel very wide and make it slip more. I wear a 9.5D, if I go to a 9E, I can slip a finger on each side of my heel.
