Now I just heard from a friend that they did not get tenure. Part of the reason was "collegiality." Funny, that's no where in the job description. This place clearly likes to get rid of the people who they think don't quite fit in with the social structure.

This is true for most every research university in my (albeit limited) experience. I am surprised they would explicitly state collegiality as a motive for denying tenure though. They usually have no problems finding other "more legitimate" reasons. One of the first things I learned in graduate school about the tenure process is that no matter how well (or poorly) you perform, if the people at the top of the power structure don't like you, they'll find a way to get rid of you and if they like you, they'll find a way to grant you tenure.
