I know.... I just want to believe that people are not as dimwitted and lazy as they are. I have ridiculously bad stories, those were simply what happened over the last couple days. We had our second cryptolocker infection in two weeks. There has just been an epidemic of stupidity the last few days that just drives me crazy. Part of it is by the users who think they know about computers, but the last time they had any real knowledge was when they computers had 5 and 1/4 floppies.

I was in the middle of cleaning out that cyrptolocker malware last week for the second time... 50 people ground to a halt. The things people expect you to drop and just go do. People think that for some reason, the fact they cannot get on the facebooks or linked in is somehow worthy of my attention at that juncture.

Certain of my partners were complaining that I had not sending detailed hourly updates as to ETAs, explaining what encryption was and such. Nothing of any substance, mainly dog and pony bullshit. I told him that every file on site and at the dr has been irreversibly encrypted and no one noticed, despite clear indications that people knew something was up but didn't say anything. I further explained that if I have to take 20 mins out of every hour do an effing q&a on reddit for you, you-- and the remainder of the firm--- will be down for an additional significant period of time and maybe permanently unless I can clean everything out and restore the system. His response was "That is unacceptable... unacceptable response. I demand that you give a better detailed explanation as to what you are doing to resolve this right now." To which I laughed and walked away. The managing partner heard and even started laughing.

The next day the same guy tried to pick another fight. Certain purported defamatory statements were published from a certain "anonymous" web mail account in a domestic relations case. I was brought in to consult, as was he, by the other person. I explained that this webmail providers policy was to strip away the ip info of their users and replace it with their server information. You could try asking nicely for the information, but would likely need a subpoena, which means starting a litigation and such.

He swore up and down that I didn't know a thing. He advised that he had read an article once about this and he knows that there are private investigators that can get detailed information for you....blah blah blah. He then sent the article that was about cyberbullying and was written in ridiculous fonts. It was a vapid waste and contained nothing but psychobabble. (Who ever wrote it, needed to get the shit kicked out of them for publishing such drivel.). He then sends me an email and says, look at the header there is ton of "data" in there, you should examine this and get back to everyone with the results. I explained that if we were attach the entirety of Shakespeare's works, we would have a ton of data, but all of it would be noise b/c it isn't relevant data. We need to focus on obtaining relevant data. A few expletives later and after I asked him if he checked the IP addresses in the email, he stomped off and called his "computer expert" who told him I was right--- no identifiable information was contained in this particular webmail providers email headers, as all of the relevant IP information resolved back to the webmail provider's servers (which it did).

I have my real big boy job to take care of -- which amounts to at least 14 - 16 hours many days. No one chips in to help me, despite the fact that they have half the billables I do and a quarter of the collections. I simply do not have the bandwidth to be involved in these peoples' fantasy land where it is acceptable to routinely engage in a quests seeking pointless intellectual masturbation, inane conversation, or even getting sucked in to their stupidity. If you are not contributing to the success of this place, at least be smart enough to stay the hell out of my way. FFS.

He definitely went a little too fast at first, and she has asked him to slow it down, but I suspect you forget how to date after 45 years of marriage. His mood has improved over the past few months, largely as a result of his new "friendship." My father and I are both fine with this whole scenario...but my mother is a different story. She has loathed the idea from the start and several times has asked grandfather to not talk about his friend in front of her. It all came to a head this weekend, when my grandfather was with us at my parents' vacation home in the Adirondacks. Before he left yesterday, he asked my father if he could spend a weekend there with a few friends and his new girl. Dad said, "Sure, why not," and later in the day casually mentioned it to my mother. She went ballistic, said it was an insult to my grandmother's memory, how dare he bring a different woman there, etc.

I'm not sure she understands the corrosive power of loneliness. Gramps was getting progressively more depressed over this past year, until he met his friend. I don't think she gets that. It's his life to live, and I know that he was madly in love with my grandmother all those years. This situation is not disrespectful to her memory.

It's frustrating but not surprising considering my mother's demeanor.

Maternal or paternal grandparents?

The thing is, I'm not even averse to helping people. It's just that, as zarathustra said, when people have this expectation that you are their personal go-to tech person and will drop everything and run to fix their issue. So, TLDR: fuck entitled twats, but don't mind helping friends and family.

Exactly. If you are considerate of my schedule and craziness, I will do a good deal to help you. Maybe.

When women remarry, it is because they detested their First husband; when men remarry, it is because they adored their first wife. - Wilde.

This, I feel is often true, to the point that some women may misinterpret the new relationship as a sign of earlier problems in the first relationship, when it is more an expression of love and loss.
