A guy from my lab committed suicide (in the lab) last year. He "had it all," had the wife, tenure-track position at a good school, getting good work done. It seems like the whole tenure-track stress thing made him depressed. He must have been good at hiding it. Never would have suspected it from knowing him, he never seemed like someone that got overwhelmed by work.

It's tough, I don't think it's something people with healthy brains can really understand fully.

Wtf is this the week for suicides? I got a call while on the road two days ago - a former colleague committed suicide by stepping in front of a train. He'd gotten laid off last month.

Left behind a wife and two girls under 5

more like your typical born again immigrant from california, who believes that his adopted land (murkah) is going to fall and obama's bringing the fail.

Long story short I made several recommendations to the Board concerning a huge capital project. My recommendations were ignored. Now that everyone has figured out I was correct and one faction has called a meeting to attempt to course correct. The only problem is we're so far down the garden path course correction is going to make this project cost probably another 10%.

I'm looking forward to your post in the happy thread where you chewed people out after this meeting.

I would blame it on the lack of vitamin D or on SAD but winter hasn't even started.

On a different topic, I have, from personal experience, known that Bose headphones are generally pieces of shit. Despite that, I still bought a pair of Boses a few months ago.

Well, I just pulled them out of my bag and the housing just comes apart in my hands. I think I'm more pissed at myself than Bose to be honest

I surmise that it's possibly because the quiet comforts don't have a lot of competition in the noise canceling arena (although there's a ton of competition in sound quality)

If you bought anything else then yeah...

Plus the fucking Brazilian Consulate for Connecticut and Rhode Island is in Hartford. I'm closer to, and work in NYC (which also has a nice perfectly functional Consulate). I don't gots no time for me to be dryvyns to no Hartfords.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Also its kind of expensive - its around $160 per application. (I understand that its because the USA charges the same mount so Brazil wants to be even-steven).

There is a super easy solution for the wife and I: Apparently Brazil have an open travel agreement (no visa requirement) with the Philippines. My wife and I are both dual-citizens and have both USA and Philippine Passports. But we never use our Philippine Passports (except for re-entry to the Philippines) and they are going to expire in less than 6months. Of course there's always a 6 month valid passport rule when traveling. ffffuuuu.gif

also - I like traveling using the USA passports because, just in case shit goes down I'd rather have the golden parachute of 'Merican protection.

Pretty pleased that Danes just need a couple shots (yellow fever etc) and then I'm good to go.

Yes, this was pretty much my reason. I'm going to go back to Bowers & Wilkins. I have a pair of those too but they're not really noise canceling (more like isolation) and they make my ears hot

Sorry for your loss, but people who commit suicide by jumping out in front of train drivers piss me of, why would you ruin some poor train drivers life, just because you don't want to live.

He sounds exactly like my high school acquaintance who shot himself about 6 months ago. Had a six-figure job in Detroit, friends, just bought a house. I guess he struggled with depression for many years which I didn't realize.

Really does mess with your head.
