We use/need/save old e-mails so frequently that I hesitate to delete anything.

I delete everything. Too much actually. I have to ask people for things a lot, but I don't care. I just hate clutter in my inbox.

If you copy yourself on all your outgoing emails you can just purge your sent folder regularly without reviewing the contents. Having everything in your in-box makes it a bit easier to sort and winnow.

They're saved long term but not deleted. Kind of like off-site storage.

where does one access them? i see trash and deleted items, folders. but not an archived messages folder.
