+1 on ceviche. A few weeks ago, for no good reason, i went way over the top and made 4 different types of ceviches for one dinner. It was awesome and unnecessary.

I have been told that ceviche juice makes an excellent hangover cure.

You know what's funny about this? One night I made like 4 or 5 different cuts of steak. It amounted to over 3 pounds. Ate it all.

Wife's company has an unlimited vacation day policy, so long as you don't abuse it.

Except that they just implemented a "No vacations longer than 5 days" policy. Which means you cannot do any sort of serious travel--you effectively can't leave the country.

This double sucks because we were planning a two week trip to Japan in the spring, which now appears to be dead.

Honestly, such a restriction would be enough to quit, except that they have everyone by the balls because the company was bought out about a year ago and everyone is shackled by their equity options.

So, no more travel for us? FML. I guess that's one way to get our travel budget under control, but that's not the way I would have chosen.

I have a ridiculously small amount of vacation time. It is a real joke actually. A large reason why a lot of young people leave the company is it takes too long to get more vacation. Honestly, that would be the last reason I left.

Vacation days are very important to both of us. I'd honestly immediately turn down any job that didn't have at least four weeks a year.

My first job had very little vacation time and really made me realize how important it was. By the time you factored in a couple days at Christmas and Thanksgiving, you had just a week left. No time to go see friends, take a long weekend every now and then, etc. Not worth it.

To be fair, when we are not in crazy crunch time if you put in extra hours you get every a day off every other week. This to me lets you plan long weekends accordingly so you don't have to use vacation time. I basically see it as a freebie because most people are working the hours anyway.

I have to say I enjoy my vacation time and it's almost like I work for the government in regards to my time off package.

I also have a very generous vacation policy and it is one of my absolute favorite things about the firm. Going from having so little to having plenty was a real eye opener. Which is part of why this policy is so angering--it basically hamstrings a lot of the benefits of that policy.

I'm just hoping people start doing things like take a week, work one day, then take another week to make them realize it's a stupid policy. If people are abusing it, have a word with those people, or just say people need to run plans > 1 week by them, but don't blanket say "no vacations longer than one week".

I don't understand why it can't just be based on workload and at the discretion of the manager. Seems simple.

Take a 5 day vacation and a 4 day vacation separated by a sick day, or tell them to go fuck themselves.
