Or worse yet, "Personally fulfilling." There's a reason "work" and "fun" are near antonyms.

Kyle, one other bit of advice: work towards a degree. Once done, work towards a grad degree. I went into considerable debt for my grad degrees, about 75k, but I'm not advising the debt part. If you can at least obtain an undergrad it would really benefit you. I know everyone says most undergrad degrees are worthless these days but I think the fact a person has one is a door opener. Get one in something interesting that ties into your industry maybe.

very well said, G. very well said indeed.

LD - thanks. yes, it has been a long time. almost 16 years from when we starting dating, and was not always roses. it took a lot or hard work to get where we are, and i very fortunate we made it.

oh, and yeah, i pounded the crap out of my younger brothers, mostly the one closest in age to me. but they were still my brothers, and if anyone got near, there was going to be hell to pay, and they always knew to come for me if they got in a jam. one of my brothers actually used to seek out jams and provoke people and then go run to/get, me. it was kind of fun in a douchey way. im lucky my brothers still love me and know that i love, and always did love, them. i was kind of a dick to them for a long time.

what i think people sometimes loose sight of, is that there are many areas outside of ones work where you can be societally meaningful, on a small or even a large scale, depending on what one can do and has time to do. work is how you make living, being good for society is how you live your life.

Piob, the number of women on internet dating sites that post something to the effect of "I am so passionate about my career and want to find someone who feels the same way!" is staggering. When I read that, I click to the next profile.

I really dislike the word "passionate," which has become a TED-talk style buzzword that conveys almost nothing. But you know what, I especially dislike it when youngish people of a certain social class inform me that they are "pahssionate" about whatever the hell it is they're pahssionate about.

That said, I do love my career, and I couldn't imagine spending 12 hours per day (or whatever number of hours I would spend at work) doing something I didn't enjoy or that I didn't find meaningful in some way.

75% of the time what that means is, "You'd better be committed to your career so you can support us when I quit my job and seek my bliss through being a tiger mom rather than through my career as printer toner sales rep!"

Took me 2 hours to file 7 week's worth of expenses.

Bhowie, if the work perks you're talking about are related to travel, fancy hotels, and expensive dinners with an expense account, my experience is that that shit gets old.

I don't know how much you travel, but it definitely wears on you.

Just last night I was tossing and turning because I hate hotel pillows (who the fuck actually prefers feather pillows to latex / foam?) and ended up longing for my bed, as I always do on Wednesday nights.
