sheesh. i have complete confidence in you that your kid will not head that way. (...)

Well, we still worry for reasons that are beyond our control. There's a story in there about another kid we know.

since i inquired at the bank about a home equity line of credit and then my credit was pulled at the dealer when i got the auto loan, i am now getting all kinds of annoying telemarketers calling asking if i am interested in refinancing my home.
:fu:

So, you wanna re-fi your house? Rates are rock-bottom!

Just wanted to +1 this, even down to the adoption part. MrsG and I have talked about adopting down the line, and I've told her your story, T. I don't know that we'll be in the right situation to adopt an older kid if we do adopt, but your story is truly inspirational.

Thanks mang.

I was talking to a couple of psychologists a few years back and they both separated trauma from disorder and claimed that you can heal trauma and then resume the development: they're just set back in that traumatic time until they overcome it, and then they progress from there. It means that they're kinda set back a few years and that becomes their peer group. They just identify with the younger kids. This, btw, leads to some PERILOUS years (post-18) if you see where I'm going with this.

Interesting stuff. I'll look for reading in that vein.

My g/f gave me **** yesterday because I think dick and fart jokes are consistently funny. What can I say?

And poo jokes, women just don't understand the humour of wobbly bits and stuff that comes out of them.

One book you might like is Raising Courageous Kids by Chuck Smith. I talked to him a few times about our son and the book, but it's geared more to the early start. Adopting the Hurt Child is probably more apt, though.

Thanks, but I'd better make it clear before the moment passes: I'm not a saint.

Can you blame them, really? If they were totally up-and-up about everything, would anyone ever take any of these kids?
Not that any of that diminishes what you're doing. Every day you spend with that kid is a gift of truly staggering proportions.
A lot of reading I've done seems to confirm what I've believed for a while - the bits are pretty much set by age 4 or 5. Not that continued development and learning are not important, or that somehow you're destined for greatness by a certain stage, but serious emotional and developmental building blocks have been arranged (or not arranged) by then that form the foundation everything else rests upon. You really can't go back and re-build that later, or totally undo damage done in that period.

Have you seen this?

Oh don't worry about that. I'm the inverse of Conne when it comes to this ****. I already deleted her phone number, blocked it with an app, blocked her on Match, and will never speak to her again.
See, told ya so.

What app do you have that blocks people? I really need that.

I've got a close friend who was flaming gay in highschool and college, but inexplicably turned "straight" in his late 20's. lets just say this change happened when he was "born again into christianity"

its pissing me off because its just plain awkward dealing with the "straight" version of this guy. his voice is forcibly/fake-ly lowered, and he's overtly/comically masculine now.

its like he's basically acting like how a super straight guy with tons of machismo would act in a bad 80's B-movie.

and he denies that he ever was gay - not exactly the best way to deal with it when most of your close friends knew him longer when he was a flaming gay man.

I just got off the phone with his current girlfriend (who actually embodies the confused/passive aggressive kind of girl that falls for gay men) and she asked me straight out if he was gay. I didn't know what to say and just started making fun of the new masculine version of the guy - which lead to uncontrollable laughter from both of us.

I'm really pissed that I might have to lose a close friend over this. I'm in my 30's and close friends are invaluable at my age.

I've known guys who waffle. Just take a back seat, don't say anything you'll regret, just let him work it out on his own, he's the only one that will.
My sister's former best friend went back and forth for the time I knew him (bout 18 years) between fishnets and daisy dukes and carharts and dickies.
He's now an out gay man with a partner, who you couldn't tell was gay if it wasn't for the fact his clothes fit a little better than the average straight male, or met his partner (who is obvious like liberacci)
