Don't look in the SW&D alden thread.

There's a guy here at work that is extremely over-weight. I've never seen him eat something healthy. I once was about to toss some food and he asked if he could take some of it. I said no and threw it away anyways. It's disturbing to do that (certain situations may be OK but not that one). As if that's not grounds to make this post alone, he's gotten so large, he's had to go to the hospital. Apparently, he had some injury on his leg years ago and he needed a skin-graph. He's outgrown the skin graph due to the weight gain and has gotten sick from it. He's on medical leave, fully paid for by work.

It irritates me that companies don't somehow have better benefits for people that strive to take care of themselves and eat well. All guys like this guy do is make it harder for the people that do stay in shape. The costs of insurance go up.

I've recently found out, he made his own bike club. He rides a trike and has tattoos all over himself, of sharks. His nickname for his club is Shark. More like Manatee.

Oh the IT world.

Well, my company gives you a couple bucks off of your insurance if you take these screenings, or sign up for a smoking cessation program and this and that. I personally want to start a smoking commencement program and pay more for insurance. Sounds like something the cool kids would be a part of.

May only be in Europe, but here companies tend to avoid hiring very overweight people, as they are "a bad life" and at some point they will cost the company a bunch of money, due to sick leave etc.

I have a 400lbs 5'10" 26 year old female cousin, who denies being overweight, she never goes to the doctor and doesn't understand why she can't get a job in a kindergarden. rotflmao.gif

Mine is all about food, as in it's their business - specifically healthy food. But they don't do this.

Not sure if all of this was a joke, or just half of it. Either way, I did once ask him if he's thought about dieting or changing his diet/working out. He said never, he loves food and doesn't care about his weight. On some level, he approves of people saying, "Look at that fucking guy," when he walks by. It's one thing to be overweight due to slow metabolism. It's another to flat out not give a shit.

HE FUCKING ASKED ME FOR MY FOOD, DUDE.

He has a child and wife. Not sure the story but I'm pretty sure she's not a model. Maybe more towards his number. Which is north of 350. Way.

Edit: I've been told he talks to coworkers when he comes in, about what he wants to get for lunch and what he's going to do for dinner. Mostly BBQ.

Both my current and former employers offer similar programs. If you complete certain wellness activities, you get a break on your insurance, and the discount was pretty substantial in both cases (though more so at my old job). They also charge tobacco users a big premium, and I remember all of the smokers at the old job being very upset when they introduced the tobacco surcharge because fat people, alcoholics, etc. didn't get hit with the premium increases.

The consensus seems to be that these types of programs really are cost-effective, but I don't know how much of that savings was due to the fact that both places self-funded their insurance.

Edit: I also remember MrsG having an employer before we left Florida who subsidized her gym membership.

Really? I guess it depends. On your race, neighborhood, gender and expectations from life.

This is illegal in the US as the morbidly fat are a class of people protected from discrimination of being fat by law.
