You could fix that by cheering for the better team.

It's the features of the car that matter. I guess I just figure these guys have one job, and that's to find me a car. "Econobox with four doors for around $xx,xxx" should be enough information for them to know whether or not they have something workable, but perhaps I'm giving them too much credit.

For what it's worth, I have tried to provide some guidance on models we like, so there have been some grounds for comparison. I haven't been pushing too hard with that, mostly because this is a class of cars about which I know very little and don't want to rule something out out of ignorance, but maybe I need to be more assertive with models we've seen that could work.

The Versa really is a decent little car. It's actually one of the few I cite as possibilities when we go out looking. I've driven one a couple of times, and, like otc, I was pleasantly surprised. That type of thing is pretty much exactly what we hope to find - inexpensive, great gas mileage, and reliable enough to not cost much on maintenance for the couple/few years we'll own it.

man I'm sorry for you... buying econoboxes is shit. all the more 2nd hand ones. just wondering- are prices for certified used cars from dealers a lot more expensive than those in a used car lot over there?

Nope, someone in my building likes to smoke on their balcony and the smoke some how enters my apartment, when I have the balcony door open.

That's a shame. I can tell you are a hard worker based on the things you post. I can tell you have a passion. That is frustrating. I am pretty sure I am the lowest paid in my group yet I do 90% of what my group does. Admittedly I think I am probably the lowest paid due mostly to age. I am the youngest person by about 6 years, after that one person the youngest by 15 and so on... Still burns me up.

Sweaty heat. (That is correct, not only am I sweating but the weather itself is too. If you dare to question this truth you are out of your mind.)

I was hired at the same time as the colleague in question. He initially made more money than I did. But it quickly became apparent that I was doing a lot of work of high quality, so the chair of my department advocated for me and got my salary equal to my colleague's, just as a matter of fairness. What I found out yesterday is that I was never in fact brought equal to my colleague. He's not making a ton more than me, but it's really the principle of the thing.

It's annoying. Maybe I'll just buy an air purifier.

Maybe he is a family member of somebody or something. Or maybe he offers the dean special "favors".

Discreetly go on the market and get an offer from elsewhere. If your present institution values you, they'll counter; if not move. Isn't it true that in academia people who move around often make more than their peers?

Does moving around blow up tenure track? Seems like there's a reason those guys stick around (and thus the guys who move around are probably being begged to come, hence the higher pay)

No, not if you have a good publication record and established research program. Moving around is a great way to give yourself a promotion, particularly if your current institution doesn't show you enough love.
