Things that are pissing you off. - Page 3048

I am teaching my department's capstone course, in which students are required to write a research paper. I am currently reading their second drafts, and I am just amazed at how poorly they are written. There's hardly a square inch in their papers that isn't covered in red. (I mean because I wrote many comments on them using red ink.) These are some of our best students. It's frustrating, in part because it indicates that we as a department are clearly not succeeding in teaching them the writing skills they need. We really need to do better.

You can't undo 12 years of shoddy writing instruction. I help teach scientific writing, and the number of people that can't write a two-sentence answer in correct prose would make your head spin.

As someone who studied what you teach at an institution similar to yours, my sense is that many view the MA as the place to teach said skills (but you probably already knew that). Then again, I've heard similar reports from people at Harvard etc.

So after a long flight I get this odd feeling in my head where its still clogged up, don't really know how to describe it. It goes away after a long sleep. Except this time it has not.

I also feel that I am not only well dressed but well versed. Is there a forum catering to my desires for further discussions in these arenas?

You're still in the right place; simply make any statement on any topic and some of our elite users will correct you on it. Even if it was correct. Especially if it was correct.

This is incorrect. The elite users will only correct you if it was correct. Especially if it was correct.

Snagged my tie this morning. These Isaia things are amongst the most brittle things I've ever had and I can't see why.

Think I might be brewing up a kidney stone. I just do not have time for that this week. ffffuuuu.gif

I found this to be nothing more than an excuse. English is my second language and I forced my self to learn at least the most common writing and spelling rules. Some mistakes made by native speakers are simply mind boggling.

Kool & The Gang are touring with Kid Rock. This does not seem like an appropriate combination.

"If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?"

No idea how to answer this "correctly" in an interview scenario
