Ya, me too. Seriously, what is the deal with this horn?

Ouch.

It's an estate piece in sterling silver. I can repair the horn, but I'm wondering, do they brittle with age? Maybe I can have a jeweler replace the horn.

You can only justify these things if you use them....until you break them damn thing, then you wish you used a cheap one from brooks brothers or something like that.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if they do.

the brand new ones are fairly flexible, i cant say that about this one. I may have to relegate it to the shelf if the horn cannot be replaced.

If I am going to have cake, I mostly see it as a delivery mechanism for frosting, in which case I would usually rather have a cupcake, just because it usually has more icing on it. But this recent obsession with cupcakes? Do not get it.

My office is near the Magnolias in Midtown, and that place is a shitshow, all day, every day. And the cupcakes are not even very good--stale and hard, which is surprising given the volume that place must do. Bleh.
I don't understand this cupcake fetish either. The place in Chicago always has a line way out the door, even when it's bone chilling cold outside. I was given some of their cupcakes while I was in the city in January - nothing special at all.

Now cake is a different story. I LOVE cake.

I went to a wedding reception a few years ago to find that instead of a wedding cake, they served cupcakes. Very disappointing.

Can you still use it? My dog chewed mine which is made of horn and used to be really nice, but I still use it.

nod[1].gif

though, it was not exactly "retail." sale shopping might be a better term.

People that for some strange reason choose to accelerate when you try and pass them. In the worst cases they squeeze you between 2 cars and force you to floor it or slam brakes. Happened twice on my way home. Idiots.

did you show them the powah of your AWD?

My jeweler says he can replace the horn, so some good news in all of this. I'm mostly Italian, so I have that goofy superstition about breaking things, I'm glad it was this instead of something more important.....not really, but I will tell myself that.

If the part you broke is horn, yes. As someone who worked with a lot of materials like that, I can guarangoddamnedtee that anything organic, esp horn, bone or ivory, becomes more brittle with age (barring fossilization or partial fossilization). Some people say certain woods get harder, which is sort of true, but its actually the capillaries contracting and most woods tend to split over time unless oiled regularly. If the horn was what broke I'd recommend replacing it with sambar if possible, which tends to be less brittle than most other horns, if not as pretty.

If it was the silver, one of two things probably happened, either A) there was a fault in the casting or B) there was a stress fracture, either a result of prolonged use in one area (silver work hardens, and the harder it is the more brittle it gets) or it had been broken before and someone soldered it back together well enough that you couldn't see it, which if its .995+% sterling is possible, albeit incredibly difficult.
