You checked under the sink and made sure it wasn't something simple you could fix?

It's a problem pipe. Really old, needed repair for some time. I've been doing fixes on my own when I can but now that its leaking into the downstairs we decided to just do it. $800 for the whole thing and I'll have some patching to do. Not great, not as bad as I feared though.

not horrible, but certainly a PIA. good luck with the repairs, hope it all goes ok.

the shitty apartment I was staying in in college had a rat infestation.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I bought some glue traps and ended up trapping a huge fucking 6inch long (not even including the tail) rat. The problem was it wasn't even really "trapped" because it was only really stuck to its back legs. The rat was still pretty mobile and scurrying/dragging itself around using its front legs.

I didn't really know what to do so I got an old rice sack and managed to trap the rat inside and it was writhing around violently inside. I walk outside to the alley and plan to just toss it into the dumpster and I see a stray cat looking at me longingly. Curiosity took over good judgement and I throw the sack toward the cat.

this is where things get interesting:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the rat crawls out of the sack while the cat is just hissing and doing that weird low pitched cat yawl sound and the rat stops as the cat slowly approaches.

from there the cat grabs the rats head and starts biting the rat.

you see I was always used to house cats just killing their prey by shaking it to death and then leaving the corpse intact.

but in this case the stray cat start actually gnawing on the rats face and literally pulls half of its face off... blood starts oozing everywhere while the rat is going into convulsions. the cat then proceeds to eat the rest of the rat leaving only the tail. Oh GAWD THE TAIL... THE TAIL WAS STILL VIOLENTLY WHIPPING AROUND EVEN AFTER THE CAT ATE ALMOST THE WHOLE HEAD AND BODY OFF ffffuuuu.gifeek.gif I couldn't take my eyes off the whole violent/grotesque act. I've seen some pretty nasty medical stuff but seeing a huge rat in a glue trap being eaten alive by a stray cat was just unsettling and had me nauseous and guilty that I didn't just whip the sack into the side of the dumpster/on the ground for a more merciful way to die.

Both.

They shouldn't be allowed to procreate. This asshole made me wait in like again but let the chick skip.

As for an exterminator, they're not that much. Sign up for a service, it's like $90/quarter, and they'll show up as often as you need. But don't expect to be blown away by what they do. They'll put out some traps, help you diagnose where they're coming in, and then you've just got to stay diligent til they're wiped out. Spring coming will be your best helper.

At least I can expense the hotel cost.

The exterminator won't do anything you can't do yourself (unless you have an obscene number of rats). Buy tons of traps, buy some rat-food-poison and set it up near walls and where you've heard them or seen their droppings. Sticky traps don't work for bigger rats, you'll probably want to get some fatal ones. Especially if they're in your attic, it means they climbed through elsewhere -- check around your exterior walls for holes etc, but you can do this all yourself if you have the time. And if you don't mind seeing dead rats on traps.

Good, I was going to say--if work forces you to work the weekend or cancel a vacation that forces you to eat money on pre-booked travel, they should cover those costs. Has happened to me before and it definitely blows.

Maybe I'm an asshole, but I don't have much sympathy for rats. I mean, I'm not going to deliberately cause one undue pain, but some people get all up in arms about how traps are inhumane and stuff and it just drives me crazy. Rats are pests, I am going to kill them in any way possible, especially after seeing the damage they can cause to a house.

My in-laws had some rats in their attic that they didn't notice for a good six months (how they didn't notice them for that long is another story, it was a lot of rats) and they caused a ton of damage to their belongings and even the house. Kill them, kill them with fire.

Nope - not an asshole. Rather, perfectly reasonable. They are pests. They spread disease. Folks who believe such treatment is inhumane have entirely too much time on their hands.

I bought some expensive rat poison (that in hindsight should only be sold to professionals because of the strict instructions and how one shouldn't touch it with their bare hands) and placed them in our factory floor after finding out rats were gnawing at the wiring of some of our machines. needless to say the excitement one feels about the effectiveness of this product was negated by the fact that our factory stank for days when rats would crawl under spaces you didn't know existed and died.

Worse are people who hire an exterminator to well...exterminate the pests but won't kill the things themselves. If anything, doing such is even less humane.

Dude, if I thought it would get rid of these rats, I would gladly crucify one in view of the others. Thankfully I have a cat and two dogs so they aren't coming in the house.
