Barter economy, broheim. You've no idea the number of bartenders or bartendresses I've rep'd in DUI or custody cases and so I drink free everywhere I go. It's a real impediment to my sobriety.

High-priced, no.

Low-priced? Well that's my bread and butter.

I go back and forth on whole foods.

Pros:
-I walk by it on my way home from the train
-They have stuff that Jewel doesn't carry (certain vegetables, meats, cheeses, etc)
-The guys at the meat/seafood/deli counters are always there. I feel like they pack up super early at my other two nearby grocery stores.
-Some stuff doesn't really cost any more, or is noticeably better than regular grocery store stuff (like their yogurt selection)
-Everyone is friendly, they don't have any of those infuriating self checkouts, or require you to have a god-damned loyalty card to get any of the advertised prices, and even at busy times there is never more than a 2-3 person wait.

Cons:
-Regular things can be $$
-There is a difference between trying to be a good grocery store and a "whole"-type place. Their refusal to sell products with nitrates/nitrates (they instead sell meats with added "celery juice" which is basically liquid nitrates) infuriates me to no end. It means most of their bacon/sausage/salame/ham/etc sucks.
-Along those same lines, their deli-meats kinda suck. Jewel is even worse but has a bigger selection...and there are other shops that carry boars head.
-The produce really never seems to be anything special. Better than trader joes produce, but also costs double.
-The saddest cereal aisle in all of retail. Seriously, I would rather shop for cereal at walgreens.

I still shop there all the time for the first reason though. It is super convenient and I absolutely hate Jewel.

We've got a chain that has been expanding rapidly in chicago called Mariano's and they are pretty bad-ass--basically everything that people think whole foods is (a grocery store that sells the best-tasting/highest quality version of stuff, rather than the most "whole"). I kind of want to choose my next apartment somewhere nearby one of them.

this just hit me - you know the best goddamned thing about Whole Foods? it's single redeeming quality??

THERE ARE NO OBSCENELY FAT PEOPLE ON FAT SCOOTERS

shit, now i feel a lot better about paying $5 for a small box of rice krispies

No fat scooters.

But I did once have a woman working behind the deli/prepared foods (pasta salads, empanadas, etc) counter who didn't eat meat. I wanted to know which chicken salad I should get and she was just like "I don't eat meat"...not even a helpful "oh sorry, I'm not a meat eater, but I hear the Curry one is better"

Shit doesn't even have to be true (like I imagine it's not true when you ask waiters which one is better from a huge menu)...you just gotta say something, and I will buy that instead of questioning my indecision all night.

thanks for the well wishes, guys... really appreciate it. as an update, I visited my grandmother in the hospital yesterday. she did have a stroke, and is under observation. from the looks of it she probably won't talk properly anymore and she seems to be at a loss for words. her hearing and eyesight's has also gone down from the time I last saw her in November. she's not in i.c.u., but we know she's not gonna be with us for long and I think I'm fine with that... I just hope she finds her peace- she's the type that likes to feel sorry for herself a lot, and I have this impression from our limited communication yesterday that she's very afraid to pass away. growing old really sucks!

One has gone to live with the dad but still gets dragged into the BS and the other one is to young. At times I think we should just offer to take him and let her go live the single life.....

you and lc seems like great parents... I'd also consider that if I were in your place... at the least the kid can get a whole new wardrobe sewn by lc

So my great aunt who is effectively our grandmother moved to Atlanta a few years ago. She is nearly 80, I forget exactly but is having real trouble moving around now and is sick. Basically not expected to live that much longer. Well, her and my sister had been talking about genealogical research on our family, its something my aunt is very interested in and my sister was just getting into it, really doing some in-depth research and they spent a lot of time talking about it. They were going to get lunch yesterday.
Except my sister stood her up.
Which I would be surprised by if she hadn't done it to me so many times growing up (and is probably partly why I'm perpetually afraid people are going to do the same to me. It was always a big deal as a kid for me to hang out with her and when she wouldn't call or anything it seriously hurt my feelings for days afterward).
So anyway, my aunt called my mother and chewed her out for a while, for the first time since my mom has known my great aunt (decades) she legit dropped the f-bomb and vowed to never come over to my parents' place as long as my sister is living there. Its too long to type but--that's bigger deal than it would seem.
My mom was going to talk to my sister about it but my dad said she walked out of the house while my mom was talking to our aunt, came back, left a note that said things "weren't working out" at the house and she is moving to North Carolina (one of her original plans when she moved in).
So fucking glad I do not live there
.

your sister needs a good man, ed. I suggest conne.

+++++

so last night I was at my sister in law's party, and her brother in law was there. the most annoying piece of shit I know. anyway, he got into mountain biking a while back, and ignorant me went with him a couple of times and those were the two times I seriously considered stopping. he's the type that would go on and on and on and fucking on about some mundane issue, even if you stop talking to him. he just won't stop. and he's so offensive I'm surprised no one has beaten the crap out of him yet. (during my mother in law's wake, he went up to another sister in law of mine, who was obviously grieving, and said something like 'why are you wearing make up like you're going to a party?'). ((also last night I heard him talking to my wife about his wife's thyroid problems, the wife was sitting beside him, btw- and said something like his wife's gonna look like a frog)) so anyway he just wouldn't let up about us biking together again, and he'd call me up. and this is after telling me that I should bike more often because I look like I gained weight.

fuck him, if he calls I think I'll finally end what he believes is our friendship.

My girlfriend has this habit of filling the dishwasher, but not turning it on. Then I come home from work and need a ton of stuff in it and have to hand wash things. Pisses me off.
