Okay, okay, I called you ignorant and that was indeed an ad hominem. I'm sorry -- I tripped up. I'm not perfect.

Can we get back to the topic at hand? This is not about me or you.

Part of the problem with obesity in the US is that's it's a protected class and catered to.

well, that goes to a huge problem, on the one hand we treat a lot of people like kids, on the other hand we shy away from teaching them or acting in a paternalistic manner that would probably help people.

I know that you are going to think that this is fascistic - but if we had better education in school that tought people how to make simple things like beans and rice and veggies, and we taxed the crap out of highly processed foods we would do wonders for health.

another thing that I am all for, and isn't very america - we have lots of unemployed people who are "nice" with good people skills. if we paid them minimum wage to go around to poor people's houses and nag them about being healthier, eating better, etc, it would do wonders for the health of the country and save us a great deal of money in the long term. nework does somethign like this with the people who are highest risk to show up in the emergency room

I think it's like a cultural evolution thing. We aren't that many generations removed from a time when poor people had to worry about starvation. Getting fat was the least of their worries. The UMC has had longer to adapt to an abundance of food and has tended to pass on behaviors designed to prevent obesity.

Actually, there have been programs just like this. When I was doing my grad work some folks I went to school with were working in the Latino community developing lay educators called "Promotoras." Here is the wiki on the program: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promotoras

This is pretty good insight. It mirrors something I noticed with importing nurses from the Philippines. A large number of them got chunky. My conclusion was that it is because they can now afford what I call "celebration food" on an almost daily basis vs. the limiting factor of eating those foods only occasionally back home due to money.

I'm watching the price is right and I'd like to know when it became fashionable to screw the other bidders with the one dollar bump. I know it's not new but people seem to cheer for it.

I grew up poor and white but my parents cooked and taught me the same but they emigrated here from the U.K. so the drive to be something was there. If I lived in a Detroit ghetto I might feel defeated from day one.

Well, I'm off to start my festivities for NYE.

Piob, sorry things got heated. Not how I wanted this to turn out. I know we don't see eye-to-eye here and I hope this doesn't mean you don't like me anymore, lol.

Next time I get called out in the DOTY thread, I hope you're there again to back me up. If not, I understand.

Happy New Years everyone!

P.S. I would love to continue this discussion in CE later.

i had a meeting there once, but never once ventured into the amusement park. I hated every minute of being in Orlando, btw, and have no intention of ever returning.
