"A girl I'm talking to" sort of implies that it's unusual to talk to girls and that that's all you're doing.
I notice this with a lot of people my age. I don't think they get that dating is a literal term--if you have gone on multiple dates with this person and intend to go on another, you are currently participating in the activity known as "dating".
Instead they put some extra weight on the term and keep coming up with other ways to represent things that are not yet full-blown serious relationships. I think my GF's choice of words for that state was "hanging out"...wtf? I hang out with my friends, I don't ply them with alcohol and try to make out with them.
