That's when I noticed the ~18" stain on the ceiling which, upon further inspection, I discovered is wet.
Fuck homeownership.

Burst pipe (basement level)? Or just a leaky roof? Either way, I feel your pain. Water intrusion in the house is the worst.

Agree with Deadly7, water leaks fucking blow.

Upstairs bathroom perhaps?

It's between floors, so I'm reasonably certain it's not the roof, though I can't be 100% positive. It could have followed the structure and just showed up where it is.

There's a bathroom up there, but the leak is 10-15 feet from it, and I don't see any evidence of a leak in there. There's a bedroom above the wet spot, and there aren't any wet areas anywhere in the room.

I'm thinking it's a leaky pipe. The plumbing runs to the side of the house the stain is on, and if I followed a line leading from the stain, I'd end up in the bathroom.

Now I'm stuck debating whether or not to pay the cost for an emergency plumber or just cross my fingers and hope it's okay until morning. I'm leaning toward waiting, especially because there hasn't been any change since I noticed it a couple hours ago, there's no bulging, and the spot is only damp (the only way I knew it was wet was because it feels cold), but I'm worried that could turn out to be an enormous, expensive error.

I'll give you a call before Xmas and we'll chat. Sorry to hear about this stuff. You're just too young for all of this.

Can you access a valve and shut off access to the upstairs?

Nope. Unfortunately, the only mass cutoff is the main valve into the house. I can't do floor-by-floor.

There's a stat that says 50% of the advanced elderly will die within six months of a major bone break so I am fully aware she's actually in quite some danger.
On the lawyer front the ambulance chaser says this is a complete slam dunk..as if that was ever in question.

hope she gets back to her old self, piob. all the best to your mom.

Thats rough. I've been through something similar a couple of years back, panic attacks included. Keep in mind that everything is temporary, and even though its a cliche there's not much room to let it get worse. So its bound to get better..... Help does come from unexpected angles, so try and stay as open to new people as possible.

For me it was a friend who offered me a job at his company completely unexpected. Even though I'm not working at his place anymore, I will not forget that he reached out to me when that hole was at its deepest(broke, unemployed without a degree and homeless in 4 weeks). It does get better.

Should I be expecting drunken texts?

I have an expense account-able happy hour tonight. Think I'll only stay for a few drinks and wander home for an early bedtime.
