A very small region in the NE refers to Audi as "Aw-dee". It always makes me laugh.

I remember back when I worked front desk at a hotel in san francisco there was a guy who checked in with a super thick boston accent. being from the region I instinctively started to speak back to him in the accent and he thought I was fucking with him and instantly became super pissed. The best part was when I tried to talk to him about the red sox he thought I was still fucking with him. He wouldn't believe me until I showed him my Rhode Island Drivers divers license that I still had in my wallet.

I was trying to align the rear derailleur hanger of my bike with a new/pricy rear derailleur hanger gauge tool. Apparently I got a defective one that had flattened threads from shipping damage and I ended up stripping the derailleur hanger threads in the process. The shitty part was when I tried threading it slipped down and pulled out the first 2-3 threads of the hanger (the most important threads) in the process.

I don't know if I should just trying using a thread tapper, or modified t-nut, or use a thread repair kit like helicoil.

Just had today's classes cancelled. Lot's of money out of the window...

If I had meant the personal and distinct designate of a particular male person I obviously would have used the capital, wouldn't I? I understand that you know this to be true and were merely attempting humour, you have however obviously disclosed that for incomprehensible reasons you choose to use an odious and affected pronunciation.

We all sometimes make mistakes when we type on the Internet, often because we are hurried or because we are doing other things at the same time. I assumed you meant the man's name because of course I would not pronounce the common noun with the h. People think I'm strange enough as it is, just think what people would say about me if I started saying herb with the h.

I also say aluminum.

I wonder what the history of the pronunciation of "herb" is, because it's the opposite of what I'd expect. It's seems more characteristic of British English to omit initial h's, and more characteristic of American English to retain them.

I think it depends on the variety of British English, also working class and the upper crust tend to do it more than the middle class I believe. It also varies to some extent with age, with both younger and older people choosing the less prestigious pronunciation and middle aged people choosing the more prestigious.

I think you are strange, but I prefer strange people, even if they have lapses into odd pronunciations.

I had no idea how to pronounce "anomie" until recently. I once taught a class on Orwell and had the hardest time pronouncing "intelligentsia" the first couple of classes. It was a little embarrassing.

 

I also find that since moving out of an English speaking country, I'm more prone to making phonetic mistakes while typing. I'm thinking it has to do with constantly hearing a language I barely understand and thinking in terms of sounds rather than words as I write. Either that or senility. I hope it's not senility.
