In old-school pro wrestling, when the matches went on for up to an hour, the wrestlers would make use of what were called rest holds. These are holds like arm bars and headlocks which don't require much exertion of energy for either wrestler.

I have always viewed things like movies or in-class group work as analogous to rest holds. I have never made use of them even once in twelve years of teaching at the university level.
