I find that life is easier now that I don't get pissed off.

That said ... not getting pissed off any more is pissing me off.

We got our room assignments for the house in D.C. Of course I get stuck in a quad with 3 nerdy dudes. I should be in the cool dudes' quad

And all three of your roommates are on some forum saying "I can't believe we have to live with this ***."

I am away from home right now on work, a half a world away. Apparently she went into the hospital last week with some blood clots in her legs, a complication from a broken hip she suffered just a few months ago. I guess to the rest of my family in-town who knew what was happening this was not completely unexpected, but it was a shock to me just 30 minutes ago to hear the news. She was otherwise full of spit and vinegar at 89 years old.

She was a black sheep, an iconoclast, an egotist, and a legend all at the same time. Rhodes scholar, successful artist, one-time bullfighter (literally fought in the ring a few times in Mexico in the 1960s), world traveler. At various times in her life, she lived (alone - she was married for 50 years but she and her husband never lived together after their first year of marriage - it was almost a relationship of patronage) in Pakistan, Northern India, Mexico, France. Before these places were relatively civilized. (not that France is civilized today) She was instrumental in my parents meeting. I would literally not be here without her.

She was a pain **********, a tireless self-promoter never one to let the truth stand in the way of a good story, a notorious know-it-all, and very pushy in ways, but a most brilliant woman and someone who experienced more in her little pinky than most of us can even dream about, and generous in her own way with her spirit, her possessions, and her experiences. One of the last times I saw her, this past winter, we shared some ancient port in front of her roaring fireplace. I want to say it was like 50 years old because I think that's what she told me, but a) she could have been inflating the story in her usual way and b) I don't know anything about port and wouldn't have known if she was, but I can tell you that this stuff was just unbelievable. A typical Aunt Elaine experience. In her final years she lived only about 20 minutes from me after living most of her life in Normandy. I kept saying I would visit more often. I didn't make it as often as I should have.

Saddest of all, my little daughter will never get to see what a frightfully passionate, mold-breaking, independent woman this was.

If you're reading this and have an older relative you've been meaning to go see more of, get on the horn right now and make plans to do it this weekend. It's worth it.

I actually also have a great-aunt like that.

Oh, you'll be biting the pillow all right, mikey.
And I don't think you'll be losing anything; your room mates will be giving it to you nightly.

They will probably make fun of me for bringing like ten pairs of shoes. And out-of-print books written by Daniel Patrick Moynihan.
