My family is incapable of relaying medical information without assuming the ill person is on death's door. I woke up this morning to a bunch of voicemails about how my grandmother was found unresponsive in her hospital bed and is now on life support. Now she's apparently opening her eyes and trying to communicate, only hours after she was supposedly about to die.

This happens all the time with my family. No one ever just gets sick, they have to be on death's door. I spend a bunch of time freaking out only to find out that the "dying" person had a bad cold, and they're just fine.

Now I'm sitting in my office debating whether to take off work to go to the hospital, because she's 80 years old, and I have no idea how sick she actually is.

If it were me, I'd go.

My grandmother spent a little bit of time in a home (long story), and one Sunday evening my dad called and told me that the home had called him to say she didn't have much longer. She'd been through a few interesting scrapes in the past, and dad didn't have much to go on outside of 'not much longer'. By Monday morning she was gone.

Thanks guys. I've been leaning toward going, and I think you're right: It's better to go and find out I didn't need to than not and wish I had.

Even if you go and realize that she is perfectly fine, the trip down there will be more than worth it as I'm sure she will be ecstatic that you took the time to go see her.

******** up big-time.

Airfare booked, appointments set, hotels lined up for a China trip departing next Friday. I don't have a visa yet, which is normally not a big deal because I can get it turned around quickly, within 2-3 days.

But the Chinese consulate is closed all next week for Lunar New Year. My only shot is a last-ditch effort to drive down to DC tomorrow, and hope they're open and willing to cooperate.

God damn my procrastinating ways.
