They have begun to withdraw from our circle of friends and are becoming more and more resistant to our overtures of friendship (invitations to go places, etc.).

Maybe I just live in a Pollyannaish bubble, but I've never had close friends divorce. It is sad and depressing when I think about it.

It is depressing. Wait until you find out only one of them really gets to keep each friend, and the alternative scenario is even worse, where they each try to keep you as friend and then inevitably want to discuss the ex with you.

I'm in a similar situation. in a small group of friends with both the guy and the girl. she was married. she gets divorced, they end up with each other, which was a total shocker. He's the classic overlooked nice guy, and she's a knockout - 9/10 at least. So needless to say I was shocked and overwhelmingly impressed by my buddy's game.

They've been together for a year and she's turned out to be a total controlling bitch to him. She's still the same as a friend - sweet, fun loving, great sense of humor - but to her boyfriends I guess she's dragon lady. It creates so much tension along our group of friends that the rest of us can't stand it. And I'm afraid that if/when they break up it will ruin our group of friends.

My cat scratches. She thinks she's playing and gets excited, but damn. Tried getting her to stop, but never worked.

So I'm fully situated here in Nashville, house is in order, even have a great new group of friends I can hang with, and now my wife starts semi-jokingly chiming in that she doesn't like it here and maybe want to move back east facepalm.gifffffuuuu.gif

and I know that semi-jokingly means she probably means it.

I don't think we'd have any trouble selling this house (Nashville real estate is bonkers right now), and frankly I'd love to move back north east, but the old house in CT is being rented by a family and honestly I know I'm going to lose money trying to sell that thing off eventually.

Its a lot of money to just uproot and do it again so quickly, and we don't really have that much of a problem with money. Its just... I've seen the light when it comes to living in less expensive but awesome places now, and I'm weary to move back to Boston, CT, Providence, Brooklyn knowing that I'm paying so much for less (square footage/acreage/etc) and with higher taxes on top of it.

CT was a pretty shitty place to live expenses/taxes-wise, especially the nice parts. Here in Nashville its kind of the best of both worlds where we have a nice house, cool city, and can save substantially. Fucking Boston suburb or CT it'll be nice house and constant tax-rape. I don't know if I can handle living in NYC anymore (I like having a yard) which is the only place I can justify paying that kind money/taxes for a house, but then its going to be some tiny assed NYC house in queens.

damn.

That's a drag. Sorry, mang. I can't remember - the move to Nashville was for the sake of trying a different location/lifestyle as opposed to being driven by work considerations or the like?

it was a perfect confluence of wife getting a huge job offer in Nashville, and then me also easily getting one once we started looking at houses in Nashville. we don't really have any direct family in the North East anymore (parents retired back to the Philippines) so we decided to move. Now she's getting job offers in NYC, Boston, and North Carolina and thinking out loud about maybe moving.

I guess the time to do these kind of moves is still ok while we're still in our 30's, but I came from a family that moved a lot (Boston, Rhode Island, OC California, SF, Boston Suburb), and I really don't want to repeat that.

yeah. its weird because I try to vent to some of my cousins/friends back in the Philippines, or older friends from Boston (who are scraping by) and I feel like a huge asshole, but still the struggle is real mad.gif

Doesn't mean it's not a real problem in your life just because most people don't have said problem.

Larry brah, have you checked out PVD real estate? You could get a baller pad here on Blackstone Blvd I bet.

But then you'd be living in PVD.

😞

You would pay more in taxes ($ amount) in Brooklyn? That seems insane to me. I spend more on coffee in a month than my annual taxes are. Also, anywhere right outside of NYC as astronomically high taxes (my parents in jersey spend $20,000 a year).

I'm not surprised.  I was looking at places in NJ/NY for a potential job move, and I was blown away by how expensive property taxes are there.  The rates are higher and the property prices are higher, so it is a double whammy.  I'm moving from MN which is modest, but compare that to places like Tennessee, and it is huge.

Imagine what $500k gets you in Tennessee and what it gets you in NYC or NJ.  TN averages 0.75%, NY is double that at 1.64%, and NJ is more than triple TN at 2.38%.
