I did quite a bit of camping as a youngster and into my 20s. I quit when I woke up one morning at moose camp and the coffee pot was frozen and there as two new feet of snow on the crowd. That said I have to say nothing beats the morning dump while camping after a night of drinking. Just you and nature.

My troop existed solely for the purpose of the troop leaders to get away from their wives, drink beer, and play poker. It was a very dysfunctional troop. There wasn't one Eagle Scout the entire time I was in it. (I made it to life, but quit when I was 15 or 16 and developed other interests.) We were damned good at starting fires, though. Always won the fire related events at competitions.

You know you're getting old when you start recounting epic poops of years past.

At least I wasn't born old, i.e. can't go in the great outdoors.

I have a feeling there are a lot of troops like this.

When I joined my troop it was like 14 kids.  When I left and went to college it was like 100 kids.  Crazy.  All the other troops thought we were cheating the requirements etc. when we started churning out Eagle scouts.  Until they competed against us in council camps.  Not even close.  They even sent a rep to our Eagle reviews and thinking we were just letting them slide and now they use our teaching methods.  Anyway, I heard a few dads back in my day brought beers to camp and went out drinking after meetings, but I dont think that happens anymore (they're all getting too old)

I don't get camping. Awful.

1-2 nights of camping is ideal. Any more than that without access to a shower becomes dreadful.

The worst part is the mosquitoes tbh.

I was never an eagle scout. I didn't desire to complete all of those annoying required merit badges when there were so many fun alternatives (also, I never really fully grasped the process for completing merit badges on my own...so most were done at camps/merit badge events).

Made First Class as soon as I could, because I am awesome at skills.

I think I met the requirements for Star, but some asshole counselor (probably just a stoned 17 year old) at camp lost the report I wrote for my Environmental Studies merit badge, so I never received what would have been my 4th eagle-required badge. I hand-wrote an entire essay at camp--no way in hell was I rewriting that thing. Had First Aid, Swimming, and Camping all ready to go (and I suspect hiking and cycling, but they don't count if you already have swimming).

Had lots of random merit badges though...and I think my favorite "job" was when I was Quartermaster and got to be in charge of all of the gear.

WTF!

I just looked up the history of Eagle Scout requirements and it says that Cooking is now a required merit badge as of 2014.

I definitely had that one--can I apply to retroactively have my boy scout ranking increased?

No, and for what its worth they changed requirements for all the ranks up to first class. Its much harder now, which I dont get. Arent they trying to get more boys involved? Make it harder to advance is not the way.

They also changed the eagle service project where now you have to fill out some portfolio as you proceed and get approval after every step ffffuuuu.gif

Sounds like little Mathis shot up through the ranks changed the rules to make it diffelculter for others to advance.
