When I arrived at Chicago O'hare airport in Feb 1966 The benches were loaded with GIs in uniform. Military standby is a double edged sword . If you flew in uniform the fare was half price but you only flew if there was an empty seat . After I got on the list for the next seat to New Orleans I struck up a conversation with one of the many sailors . I told him the desk told me it looked good for the next flight out . He said "good I'm really getting sick of this place" I asked how long you been waiting? "Five days!!
