I have essentially been living the last 10 years of my life as a grad student (though I haven't officially been a grad student for 4 years now). It's like living in purgatory. I don't make enough money* to feel like a successful, fully fledged adult, but I've had enough success in my field-of-choice that it would be dumb to give up on it. (If I sucked at what I do, it'd be a different story.) Going after a unicorn job in a competitive field is not for the faint-of-heart.
* This is mostly by choice. It's a trade-off of having free time for career development vs. making money in the present.
