But then I would have to be on line.

Not PO'd really, but this is the closest thread. I just had a former student come to my office. He's in grad school now and he's really struggling. His eyes even welled up with tears a little bit. I don't know if this is true in other disciplines--I assume it is--but grad school in philosophy can be really brutal. There's no one who goes through the process without having their confidence shaken pretty badly. I tried to give him a pep talk, but there's only so much I can say.

The repercussions of said indiscretions have been lasting and profound. Someone has to pay.

Pretty much everyone I know that went through grad school developed some kind of stress related disorder, mild alcohol abuse being the mildest.

I started grinding my teeth. Wee.

I was going to say that I didn't find law school particularly stressful, but if you're counting drinking a lot as evidence of a stress related disorder then never mind.

And great dishonour upon Mulan's family.

I have essentially been living the last 10 years of my life as a grad student (though I haven't officially been a grad student for 4 years now). It's like living in purgatory. I don't make enough money* to feel like a successful, fully fledged adult, but I've had enough success in my field-of-choice that it would be dumb to give up on it. (If I sucked at what I do, it'd be a different story.) Going after a unicorn job in a competitive field is not for the faint-of-heart.

* This is mostly by choice. It's a trade-off of having free time for career development vs. making money in the present.
