Until recently, in California courts even if you successfully
challenged a ticket they'd still make you pay the court administrative fees (don't really remember the amount, around $50 I think). Utter fucking bullshit of course. Sometime last year or state Supreme Court's Chief Justice eliminated that requirement.
I was pissed when it happened to me on general principle, but it was particularly egregious in its impact on low-income folks who make hourly or daily wages. Lose a day's pay to go to court and deal with that bullshit, most likely pay for parking at the courthouse, prove to a judge that the ticket was unjustified, and then still have to pay what might be a half-day's (or more) net take-home pay just because the court system has budget problems and you touched it last.
It was a great move by the CJ to eliminate that unjust requirement, but real justice would be if the police department has to pay the fees if the ticket is found to be invalid.
