I used to fly to Chicago or Milwaukee regularly. I always wondered how many people paid for first class for those flights. Seems dumb to spend $500 on a 40 minute flight (though otc said his upgrade was only like $100). Plus on the downside, you've doubled the amount of time sitting in an airplane because of how long the boarding process takes.

Only if you choose to get on first. You can always walk up to the gate when they are boarding group 4, skip past them all, and take your fancy seat. Although if you sit down first...you get a drink while everyone else boards.

As to getting upgraded on international flights...who knows. It only happened to me a while back, and it was on SAS. My guess is that the list of upgrades is pretty thick on any american airline...They will give the upgrade to some random person with barely any status before they give it to a customer with zero miles.

But in my situation, I didn't have a seat--one of those "proceed to gate" situations. If the back of the plane is full and they have to seat you, it might be easier to assign just a middle-cabin seat than to find someone willing to move.

Delta's policy is to not upgrade any medallions on international flight. Even if biz class is only half full. I sure there are exceptions made, but that's their stated policy. I myself have only been upgraded once and I'm convinced it was a mistake - besides the above policy, I was traveling on a ticket purchased with miles, which are also ineligible for upgrades irrespective of your status.

Maybe someone else can chime in on what's up with the other airlines

Many, many years ago I was traveling with a boss of mine (a total skeezeball and dipsh1t) who managed to wrangle an upgrade to first class for us on a flight from Austin to Sacramento. The peasant seats, where we were supposed to sit, were apparently overbooked and there was some extra room in first class, I guess, so they let us upgrade. But later that day as we were waiting for our flight, he approached the counter and told the attendant there that we should get comped into the Medallion Lounge (or whatever it's called) because we were first-class passengers. The attendant looked down at her screen, smiled politely, and told him that the lounge was only for real first-class passengers, not those who had been upgraded because there wasn't any room left in coach.

It was one of the most humiliating moments of my travel life, tempered only by the fact that it was at least four times more humiliating for my boss.

Mildly hibbeldy jibbeldy...but I am having trouble finding a replacement ski jacket.

Basically I want a good deal on an insulated jacket with a durable shell (lightweight down need not apply), no hood or a removable hood, has pit zips, fits, and preferably comes in blue (because my old jacket is blue and I am used to it).

That combination is proving difficult. I find a lot of 3-in-1 jackets that otherwise would work, but I am not a fan of the 3-in-1 jackets...
Otherwise, it seems like most of my options come with an attached hood.

I found this closeout rossignol jacket on STP, and it looks like it would fit my requirements. Doesn't say it has pit zips, but all of the other rossignal branded jackets I can find have them. Dirt cheap with a STP coupon, but no reviews and I am hesitant to buy branded outerwear from a non-clothing company. Reviews on other jackets are positive, except for the occasional bad review from someone complaining about quality control issues (which is my main worry).

The hood is really the killer. Seems like every ski jacket these days has a giant helmet compatible hood, and most are not removable.

I've just never really had the desire to wear a hood while skiing...I don't even know where the removable hood from my jacket went. That thing is just going to flap around. Between a helmet (and optional hat inside) and a fleece neck gaiter...I never have problems feeling cold in that area.

I haven't been in the market for a new jacket but I have noticed that hoods seem to be all the rage right now. I would normally consider that a plus, but I'm not a skier and so having a hood flapping around isn't a problem for me.

I wouldn't even consider a jacket without a hood. They don't flap around at all and come in handy when you're not wearing a helmet or on the slopes.

I guess I am just not crazy about losing some of my 360 degree hearing and ability to look around freely...and I find it hard to believe that some of these giant "helmet compatible" hoods that all of the manufacturers now sell won't flap around or get filled with snow in a wipe out.

I've got a stuffable hooded down jacket that's great when hiking and you stop somewhere and need to pull on an extra layer. Then the hood is a convenient way to keep warm. But once I start moving, the fabric crinkling in my ears and the loss of visibility are just an annoyance.

And if I were to use that down jacket as an extra layer under my ski jacket in really cold weather...then what? I'm supposed to have two hoods?

Totally with you on the hood thing, otc, for all the same reasons. Even just sitting outside on a cold night to look at the stars...can't wear a hood.

I couldn't imagine doing that...

I was once in an airport with my boss before our flight home.  He had gold or platinum status (I had no status).  Anyway, the flight before ours was only half-full, so he went up and asked if he could get on that flight instead, and so they switched his flight.  He encouraged me to do the same, and they were just like "Sir, the ability to switch flights is reserved for gold medallion members or higher."  I was pretty embarrassed just by that.

Went to Disneyland, they have an 'Asian' inspired restaurant. Can anyone tell me what the fuck 'asian' food is? I don't say European food. I say Italian or French or English. Not to mention how different Indian vs Thai vs Japanese, etc food all are.
