That really adds up, considering most people have two legs and all.

Hey, getting it to stand up on a date should qualify as a success, no?

Whenever there's a story about someone's medical issues in the news I'm like "oh crud" because I know I'm going to see a thousand misspellings of HIPAA.

As many of you know, it's that time of year for les Victoires de la musique classique. Turns out this year a certain Elsa Dreisig won for "Révélation Lyrique" she refused to thank anyone upon accepting her award on account of that would be conforming to norms of which she is a independent woman don't conform to norms.

Just book it without a seat reservation.

Get to the airport early enough and either have the gate agent seat you or try to get the baggage check people to do it.

Works for me if I am flying American which has bogus premium seats that aren't economy plus with extra leg room or anything...you just have to pay extra to not choose a shitty seat in the back. Just don't pick a seat and hope that when you are auto-assigned, they will put you somewhere good.

My last flight to mexico had that happen...all of the non-extra-fee seats were totally sold out and I was placed in some gross middle seat in the back. Got there a little early and asked the gate agent for a change, and I got an entire exit row to myself...multiple people around me had entire rows to themselves too...but those who didn't ask for a new seat got to stay crammed in the back.

Thanks. Normally fly Southwest for the free checked bags, so this premium seat BS is pretty new to me.

That's one of the many reasons that I just wait in that situation.

Best case situation, the guy with the cheap-ass ticket and no seat reservation needs somewhere to sit...so sit him in a premium seat since that's all that is open. Had this happen on an international flight once...got the equivalent of business class, courtesy of buying the cheapest ticket on the plane (airline called it Economy Plus or something, but it was 2 big seats rather than 3 normals, had leg rests that extend out of the seat, had power outlets in 2009, and was served from an upgraded food and drinks menu).

But even if that doesn't happen, when people with low-tier status get their upgrades confirmed 24 hours before departure, it opens up seats in the main cabin, hopefully allowing you to get assigned a non-middle seat.

Do low status flyers even get upgrades on international flights?  We basically only have Delta here, and they treat anyone who is less than gold like cattle.

Platinum Delta status. Basically get upgraded all the time (domestically) when I'm not flying to DC.

Whenever I fly Delta (which is pert near every time I fly) the flight attendants are all be like "We'd like to thank you for choosing Delta and we'd like to ekspecially thank our gold, diamond, platinum, ruby, sapphire, and myrrh medallion customers who are just a higher quality of human being than the rest of yinz."

They should have those higher-quality travelers stand up as they are mentioned so that everyone could clap for them. What's the point of being a diamond traveler if all you get to do is sit smugly in your seat as your kind is mentioned?

I resent that. I travel a lot for work, so I have relatively high status on several airlines. But it's completely superficial for you to assume you can infer anything about my quality from those labels.
