I'm waiting for the day that that douche gets pulled over after passing me.

All tailgaters are douches and stupid too. I say this as tailgating me has never made me pull over or speed up. It has made me take my foot off the accelerator many times though. laugh.gif

If I'm on cruise doing 80'ish, and I see someone coming up behind me, I'll pull over and let them pass. No reason to hold up traffic and maybe they'll get the attention of any cop up the road. However, if I pull over, get back in the fast lane, and then have to slow down as they didn't hold speed? Yeah, I'll buzz by them on the right, put my cruise back on, and just park my ass at my speed.

I have a great story about that.  I was in the left lane doing about 75 in a 60.  I was on my way to an interview actually.  Everyone in all the other lanes is going really slow even by MN standards.  As I started to get around a semi in the middle lane, I see a state trooper in the far right lane preparing to exit.  I disengage the cruise control to start slowing down, and there is a guy who is flying up on me, so as I pass the semi, I start to move over (at this point I'm probably doing about 65).  The guy behind me passes me half on the shoulder doing about 80-85.

The cop sees this, immediately flips on his lights and gets out of the exit lane and pulls him over.  If that guy had waited for me to even move over, the cop would have been forced to exit.  That was one of the most gratifying things ever.

Betimes I drive in the middle lane (of three) going over the speed limit faster than the people to my right all of a sudden some chipstang comes up behind me tailgating flashing dat high beams such like wanting me to get out of his way. I'm like "there's still a lane on your left it is there for situations exactly like this one!" (This happened just yesterday as a matter or fact.)

Happened yesterday morning. Five state troopers on the shoulder, radar on full blast, a quarter mile away when this douche swoops up behind me (in the middle lane) and tailgates for a half second before switching to the WIDE OPEN left lane and blasting by.

Cop was already on the highway with full lights and sound by the time I reached them

My mother has never been near a chipotle bathroom, so I doubt it.

I'm starting to figure out, why you don't want to use the corporate internet with all that granny porn you search for.

Must be dat drivinfool.  I think he's caused problems on both the highway and the Information Superhighway (Internet).

The thing is no politician or bureaucrat had the balls to verbalize the thought that if you cannot afford 200k to get your social work degree from an elite university you probably should go to a school where the tuition is reasonable for the expected ROI. Also, no one would dare say that some kids are just not post-secondary material, and noncompletion is highly likely. Lastly, if trailer trash can get 30k to attend an 18 month cosmetology course...someone is going to open a school and get that 30k.

I'm a bit late to this but I don't know how comfortable I am with the federal government determine which courses of study are better than others. I also don't know how comfortable I am with them evaluating the curricula of 50+ state university systems. I get what you're saying from a philosophical standpoint but trying to nail down specifics just seems.... eh... And also if you do go to NYU for some liberal arts degree you still can find jobs in that field and out of it that will allow you to repay your loans. And if there's one message we ought to be sending to America's youth shouldn't it be: yes, you will need to work hard to be successful in life--if there's only two six-figure professorships for your field you need to be prepared for massive sacrifice and toil?

so we just had someone leave for the last time at work who I really like. What makes me most upset is she walked into my office to say goodbye immediately after I let loose a noxious one.

That's why I proposed to give banks more discretion in loaning money based on major, school, etc.  Let the banks compete for the loan business.

Well that's just surprising.

I'm not asking anyone to make a qualitative judgement as to "better" but rather an actuarial judgement as to "X% chance to experience an ROI that will allow this loan to be serviced appropriately." Not everything has to be "nailed down" but we can at least put the breaks on extreme stupidity, no? It's been spoken of here how we can hardly expect an 18 year old to make good financial choices so doesn't this mean we need society to help? This only seems fair as it's society paying.

I used to know a bit about federal student loan regulations back when it was relevant to one of my clients, and there was a lot of discussion circa 2010 about limiting student loan funding so that the payments would be appropriate for the average graduate of the program in question (I can't remember the specifics but it was something like less than 25% of the take home pay of the bottom 25% graduate). I don't think that provision ultimately made it into the final bill and the changes to student loans that were attached to the Obamacare bill were controversial but less comprehensive than the for profit education sector had feared. There were still some changes that impacted for profit education like moving from 90/10 (no more than 90% of tuition could be funded by loans) to 85/15 and they included a gainful employment requirement. Essentially the for profit post-secondary education industry exploded under GWB's lax regulatory environment and Obama identified this early on as something to fix. Unfortunately, the legislation has been fought every step of the way by industry and political interests so it's neither as comprehensive nor as quickly implemented as many had hoped to be the case by now.

Long story short, I think what Piobaire proposed is similar to what Obama proposed in 2009/2010 but got killed in congress.

EDIT: BTW, here's a great example of a conservative hit piece attacking Obama for trying to reign things in back in 2010: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2010/04/21/jean-card-education-student-loans-profit-degrees-students.html
