I think it is a waste of time, money, and energy. I don't find it ironic at all, just a no frills fun time with friends. I don't understand the dislike.

Oh, I didn't mean to say it was half-assed or ironic (besides the reverend's name...)

It was overall a lovely event and very memorable...and yeah, I bet it still cost more than $5k....but if you've got a 4-figure wedding, you've still saved a lot vs what you could spend.

I was the best man at a friend's wedding in the Dominican Republic. I grew up with the couple and they had been together for years. Wife is Dominican. Ceremony was at her grandfather's house. Family and friends. Maybe 25 people. Casual affair. Food/booze/music.

After the ceremony about 10 of us(including the couple) went out to a lounge and continued partying.

Simple. Good times.
They are sill together. This was appr 10 years ago. Definitely does not have to be lavish to be considered a "special event."

i think that the best way to avoid this is to skip banquet halls, hotel event spaces, and Italian restaurants (where you can also avoid those giant trays of ziti).

What about giant trays of fresh scarpetta spaghetti?

you know how much labor that would be?

some poor bastard would be there peeling tomato after tomato.

So? The labor is built into the cost. And if you're baller enough to serve your guests scarpetta spaghetti, prolly doesn't matter.

well that's what I was alluding to. Would be a really expensive tray of spaghetti.

Expensive Italian food pisses me off. Most Italian food ingredients are cheap as nuts. $25 for ziti and meatballs? Go fuck yourself.

I agree. I feel the same about Mexican food. When I crave Mexican food, it is some cheap tacos or enchiladas or something. Don't try to charge me $8 for a single taco.

We were married by a JP and only had a few close friends with no family. We had never planned to get married in the first place, and after eight years of living in sin, it was rather anti-climatic. It also was done in a way that completely reflected where we live which is also cool.

Family was told well after the fact.

We got married twice with no divorce in between ( long story ) will we have to get divorced twice ???
I will sometimes ask clients how much the marriage cost. I often then quote double for the divorce.

I didn't make that up, I read it somewhere but I don't remember where. Clarence Darrow, maybe.

but cheap Italian food sucks just as much as bad $25 meatballs.

Spaghettios are pretty decent, actually.
