Well tbh I think that's kind of limiting and snooty givin we are in NYC. It's just very common to have a roommate well past 30.

I think it's less so "oh he has roommates? What a loser!" And more "oh wow he lives alone (in a not shithole 1br / studio)? Swoon"

All my friends on the east and west coast have roommates and none of them are underemployed. Just the way of life until you're late 20s or live in a high COL city.

Actually I have one friend who works at one of the major tech giants in SF and he lives alone. But he's always complaining about rent despite making a good salary for his age.

The whole thing about getting out on your own as soon as possible even if it means living like shit is a silly American thing too.

The Hollywood-inspired picture of the dude getting tons of pussy and ripping it w tons of friends from his 1BR home base must always be tempered with the real world picture of eating dinner alone in front of the TV "many" weeknights.

Don't forget "posting on SF how much said lifestyle doesn't really bother you".

An important part of living alone is purporting the myth among all married/cohab dudes you know. :P

a good roommate is like having a good wife. all through college and post grad I had this roommate who was the illegitimate son of a rich taipan (he had this ridiculous allowance from both sides of the family who used money as a way of showing affection) and we lived in some awesome assed apartments, split the bill on a cleaning lady/cook/ect. He always had a hot girlfriend and her friends around so in undergrad it was always easy to have fun/go out/get laid almost daily. We're still great friends up to this day.

that can work, especially in expensive assed cities like San Francisco, or NYC. but still if you can afford a smaller place by yourself + a dog + regular dog walker and its still the same expenditures... then I personally would live by myself and the dog as a friend. I remember having a ton of fun in college, but damn some days you want to sit in your underwear and just chill out in front of the TV eating pizza.
