It isn't like it is somebody better than your wife or in place of them, just somebody of your persuasion that you're particularly close with at work. Like if the workplace were real life, this would be the best that you could do.

My comment was in answer to the thought the joy of working was not being with your wife. I take no joy in not being with my wife as she really is the person I enjoy spending time with more than anyone else.

You almost certainly are.

Am I really the only person who sees and acknowledges this work-wife phenomenon. People at my company out-right use the term.

I don't think you are being 100% honest with us.

Ah, yes, you are quite right. Never thought of that.

I live in the utopia called Sweden, we don't have prisons. We have places they sent criminals to where they can chill out, network and meet other people with the same interests. But alas, I have a regular job.

So you have a company full of horrible people. I have an ex-employee that once claimed to be my work wife. She's a fucking psycho bitch, pathological liar, hypochondriac, and generally a horrible person. Notice she's an ex-employee.

How much truth is there to this?

One person who is no longer with us vs. an office that openly endorses work-spouses.

No comparison.

It is just a few people who say it, it isn't like embedded in the culture, but there are tons of men/women who are always seen hanging together and going to lunch. When somebody said work-wife I knew exactly what they meant.

Speaking of which, this new hire is trying too hard to become my new work-wife. Little does she know there is a long line she's gotta get in.

My work wife used to be a lesbian Indian woman and my boss a huge gay man who we called mamma bear (he was the equivalent of a work mom)..
