most companies, including mine, let their employees flex a little time on business travel because they realize what an imposition (and relative hardship) business travel is. congrats on letting them have their cake and eat it too.

Okay I just did a experiment I searched for the song "I'll Be There" on Spotify. Usually I just go to the band (L.A. Guns) or the album (Shrinking Violet), but I wanted to see how far down the song would be on the list of search results. Turns out it was almost literally at the bottom. I wrote Spotify a letter let's see if they have the integrity to put it closer to the top of the search results.

^in Gone Girl the ben affleck had a twin sister who had $40k in savings.

jesus, I guess its not too late to buy snow tires. I have to drive up two normal sized steep-ish hills to get my house, but hot damn did I get almost stuck this afternoon. I was driving in sketchy conditions (4inches of wet powder in about 2 hours) and thought "ok I've got speed and momentum lets put it into 4th gear and mosey up this motherfucker" everything was good but when I got to the house it was like fast and the furious tokyo drift into my driveway.

I had my official university portrait painted this weekend. (All the superstars of the university have their portraits in the "Hall of Portraiture.") I wasn't too pleased with how the painter chose to represent me.

one of my high school batch mates had to be admitted to the hospital for psych reasons....

I guess she could be characterized as a bit of a blazing comet, the child of a physicist mom, and international chess master/judge father she was a mensa member since elementary school that competed in/wiped out the competition at international math/physics olympiads all the way through high school. By the time she was plowing through undergrad/medschool there were signs she was losing it mentally and everyone (family included) probably just tried to ignore it due to the stigma of mental health issues in asia as well as the fact that she was still doing great academically.

by the time she graduated medical school she was a wreck, never actually taking any of the board exams and now having episodes where she'd disappear for a week and there'd be a mad search for her. it was a vicious cycle.

what pisses me off is now there's this huge outcry on Facebook for "everyone to help!" but back in the day most everyone made fun of her because her parents were so driven and ambitious, but also because she was just lightyears ahead in terms of grades/intelligence/achievement that there was a backlash and resulting asian crab mentality at her success. We went to different medical schools but once the professors/consultants would find out that we were high school batch mates they'd have a ton of questions but mannered as if she was an oddity/freakshow.

My wife and I were actually friends and nice to her throughout, and it was always a huge thing when she'd randomly show up at my wife's or my birthday parties bringing thoughtful gifts (my wife book about the pythagorean theorum guy and for me a DH Lawrence book that I thought was just joke gift but I'm not going to lie did surface a ton of mommy issues I'll never be able to shake).

and now with my birthday coming up and her half a world away, I guess she won't randomly show up. I'm pissed of, and now sad that I know she won't show up.

I had a HS classmate like that. Not sure if he was as brilliant/a Mensa member, but he was ahead of us by a significant margin and driven by domineering parents as well.

The sad part was that he, either by nature or by his parents' direction, also got ahead by being hypercompetitive (in a zero-sum sense, not a cooperative one) and back stabbing his classmates, so you can add some well deserved hatred and ostracism to the normal jealousy that people encounter when they're on top.

Now I'm older I can understand how his early life would have been like, but still - fuck him

I've heard that these are one of the few groups for criminal defense that still really pony up the dough because often times for higher level drug dealing cases and the like, the state seizes or freezes assets, so they don't have much to spend on their defense. Is that true?
