Apparently a section of cubes lost power as all of the affected battery backup alarms keep blaring.

However, it dawned on me when I started thinking of friends' parents' houses from when I was a kid. Most of these are people I'd consider UMC and pretty affluent, and they all had houses that sat on lots that were tiny relative to the footprint of the house.

I really have no use for all that space. With it comes a lot of cost, and it seems outrageous to me to pay tons of money for square footage I'll seldom use and own only to say I have it. I would gladly give up 1000 square feet under air for a bigger yard and a nice deck.

You live intown, though. One of the compromises is supposed to be less room. Out in suburbia/exurbia, we supposedly give up a lot of urban amenities for things like room between houses.
I don't watch those shows much, but, yeah, I'm almost always appalled by the "needs" of the people on them.

What I'd love some day is to have a home in Ansley Park or somewhere like that. Big, nice houses with lots of land (well, plenty) and still be in the city... there's one ridge that sits above Peachtree where you have massive, unobstructed views of the skylines... would kill for one of those houses. If only I had a spare $3m laying around.

Couldn't you put your kids on an oversized hamster wheel to satisfy their need for running around? Is this product available? Because if not I may have found my golden ticket

From what I've seen kids like to cover ground and explore so it's not just about giving them a treadmill to play on.

On a somewhat related note, I am amused with the anti-kid brigade in our society. I wouldn't say I'm annoyed by it because I understand where it's coming from and feel bad for people who wouldn't enjoy having children around. I mainly dismiss young people who don't yet have kids, because let's be honest their opinions are meaningless when it comes to the topic and they often make fun of breeders while simultaneously and, without one bit of irony, anthropomorphize their pets. For people who are beyond their child-bearing years or who really have definitively made the choice not to have kids - I say kudos. The world would be a less crowded place with more people like them. Of course, there would be a lot fewer of them if their parents weren't breeders, but they never seem to acknowledge that all adults were at one time children.

I'm not accusing you HRoi of any of this - for all I know you have 5 kids and you don't seem to be one of the anti-breeders. Your comment made me think - huh, he could be someone who doesn't have or want kids but isn't an anti-breeder.

the biggest offender here is those who have had kids and now they're all out of the house.

Old people with grown up kids who anthropomorphize their pets are quite different. They generally want grandchildren and don't make fun of breeders so there's no inconsistency there. The people I'm talking about complain about their friends talking about kids all the time and at the same time have dogs who they constantly prattle on about and instagram about, etc.

Dogs are to children are like boogie boards to surf boards. It's cool, I don't have any problem with people who prefer boogie boarding, but people who surf aren't worried about what boogie boarders think of them.

I don't surf or boogie board but think the analogy holds.

so the people who complain about kids aren't allowed to care about anything else? The theme I'm getting is simply "people who post a lot about one thing are annoying", which is true.

That's your takeaway? I guess my writing is poor and/or your reading comprehension is insufficient.

I don't know how to put it in words that would make sense to you but let me try. Given that this is nominally a forum about style, imagine a fan of stacy adams shoes who has a stacy adams themed tumblr (I suppose it could be called fuckyournonstacyadamsshoes.tumblr.com) clowning on someone who constantly posts about their edward greens. This lack of self-awareness seems to be rampant among pet owners. It's cool, I get why people are annoyed by just about anything, but all things being equal, people who instagram their dogs are more annoying than people who instagram their babies. People without dogs and babies stand on firmer ground when criticizing the former groups. Fact.

come to think about it, I can agree with this. Most of the dog fanatics I'm friends with post the nightly "last chance" list from the shelters. By the morning, I know all those dogs are dead.

I worked with someone like that. She cared more about dogs then people because people could take care of themselves. She felt worse for dogs in shelters then for orphans or kids in the foster care system.

Received my first utility bill at the new apartment. Maybe I shouldn't have moved out of mom and dad's house. ffffuuuu.gifffffuuuu.gifffffuuuu.gif

I once had a boss shame me for being Catholic...how the over-breeding Catholics were responsible for "double-digit yearly population growth" and the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. No joke, she told me my parent's should be ashamed for having so many children, and that is why she chose to adopt.

I think really, she was pissed off about being old, and probably because she dicked around into her 40s.
