The weather forecast called for a low of 1, but it is currently -10 before windchill.

Then again they told me I was stupid for going to university, as that would turn out to be a waste of money, because a guy working the line three stations down got his two year college degree in biology and couldn't find a job.

Then they're doing something wrong. I grew up in a union family too (at least on one side of the family), and we didn't live in a shack, we had new cars every 3-5 years, typically, and we went on two vacations every year. Was it mcmansions, MB cars, and luxurious, exotic locales? No, but somewhere in between.

When I say "shacky" I mean your standard wartime or older house that has not been modernized. That still makes up the majority of housing stock of where I'm from which would be part of the mystery. Most of my family would also go on vacations too. For instance my sister and her husband own an actual shack (tiny one room cabin) on the French River outside of Sudbury. They would go up there for two weeks every year to sit around, drink Molson, and smoke Export A cigarettes with his family. They sold the shack several years ago when he was diagnosed with COPD and now rent a motel room in Florida for two weeks every winter.

I'm serious when I say this Piob: I like hearing stories from back for you. This isn't patronizing but it's so different from my life and it's a world that otherwise I'd know nothing about. I think it's also neat to see how you've gone from that to Suburban McMansion trash. Two sides of the same coin? inlove.gif

My father owns his own business and he definitely thinks being a salary man is a better life and he's pretty baller.

Oh, I'm not affluent enough for a McMansion. A guy can dream.

Don't you have a wine cellar? That qualifies enough as a McMansion, imo.

I'm planning on starting a business in the next couple months. I'll still be able to do my full time job during the day, but if it gets to the point where I no longer can, great success!

Exciting and scary at the same time.

Some people conflate the definiiton of McMansion with that of an actual mansion. Its not the same thing as a tacky mansion.

Although piob has a lot of land around his house...so it can't be true mcmansion:

I don't really understand the "hate" for mcmansions. So if you can't afford an estate, you have to live in a tiny 2 room house with a white picket fence?

Or you look at the beautiful old houses in places like South Orange and then go inside and realize they are total shit. I'll take a mcmansion over a jacked up drafty honest house any day.

I have a feeling the best salaried jobs are ex-pats working in a NGO located in 3rd world countries.

I have a couple friends who work at Asian Development Bank in Manila and another in Malaysia and they pull in 6 figure salaries (which isn't super high), but literally everything else is paid for, a large mansion in super exclusive gated village (including paid maids/help/driver), company SUVs + free gas, tuition for children at prestigious international schools and they usually super cushy flex work hours (things like 7am to 3:30pm) just to do basic managerial things (super low stress)... they are even allowed to teach at the local universities and be part time consultants on the side too.

this might be a perfect PB job figuring he's already living part time in Cambodia already!

Except a lot of the true mcmansions are jacked up drafty houses. They just have a bigger blower in the furnace to make up for the fact that the 25ft living room ceilings suck out all of the heat.

They are built like shit--they won't be standing when they are as old as those houses you are talking about.

And what...are they assuming you'll never go in the back yard and see your house from any other angle?

It would be like if if Michelangelo didn't bother to carve out David's ass crack because "who cares about anything but the front view"
