i find i can get a lot of the movie i want in blue ray at target for that price too.
+1. even a regular DVD with an HDMI cable is noticeably less crisp than BRD.

HD DVD was a blu-ray competitor for a short while before it died. Think of Beta Max and the Sony Mini Disk.

Maybe its just me but I have a difficult time seeing the difference betwen hd and blue ray but not vrs the original copy of movies that are 20-30 years old.
I recently bought raging bull in blue ray and it looked like I remember seeing it on TV a few months ago and that was HD. Both were on the same TV 50 IN Plasma

Yeah...HD TV is not the same as DVD...

At best, the bluray will be 1080P and the tv will be 1080i. So basically instead of every frame getting updated on every refresh, the HD version is updating every other line on each refresh. On most TVs you won't be able to tell the difference unless you know what you are looking for and if you pause it on anything but a fast motion action scene, they will look identical. If the HD TV version was 720p, it will also look pretty dang similar from a distance.
The only thing I could think of would be that some cable/satelite providers are known for over compressing their feeds and as such you would see compression artifacts (things like really bad definition in the blacks in a dark scene).

Bluray vs DVD should be a noticable difference close to the TV. From my normal viewing distance of my 32" TV, I would probably have trouble telling the difference other than in certain types of scenes where the bluray would look noticeably sharper. Other than that, there are things like better audio and frame rate options in the bluray (no 3:2 pulldown) that make it better.

Its not the same as the VHS-DVD jump, but at this point there is really no good reason not to go with bluray hardware. I would guess that Bluray production is pretty close in cost to dvd manufacturing these days so the price difference should be evaporating over time.

Watching FSC (fox soccer channel) is painful on the plasma

Oh yeah, I also had a Sega CD and 32X and a Laserdisk player...

So our washer / dryer is kaput and I thought I'd give the local store guy a shot. He says he needs to send a guy to look at the closet, measure and scope what equipment would fit in there. Charges me $55 for that... wtf? ok fine send the guy. After he sends the guy, calls me and quotes me equipment prices and $600 just for delivery and installation!!! I'm all for feeding small businesses but that is ridiculous. Six hundred dollars... they're 4 blocks away... I called home depot and they apparently will deliver & install for free

fun fact: when I was scoping out a stove (this is back when we were considering the Bleecker St. move), I called PC Richards, said I'm an architect, and got $80 off their "lowest" offer.

My dryer fried this summer. A couple months out of warranty. $170 to fix it. I thought it was going to be a lot more actually.

add "small business washer/dryer installer" to my list of "if **** hits the fan" career backups. First on the list is locksmith. 1 washer dryer and 2 locks a day for 5 days? Over $350K a year in income. :slayer:
