****. We just got notification we are subject to a compliance audit with certain labor and employment practices required of government contractors. We do have some gov't contract business but were under the impression we were too small to need to qualify for these rather onerous requirements. Well, it appears we were wrong.
It doesn't look like any penalties or anything will be involved but to keep our gov't contracts we will need to start complying with a whole **** ton of pointless administrative BS. Example:
We will need to begin compiling statistics on our minority applicants. Applicants, not interviews. So if we post a job on CareerBuilder and get 150 resumes (not unusual in the least) we have to send a bounceback to each and every applicant, no matter how qualified the application, requesting their race information, and then log that data.
In addition to being a giant administrative hassle, this may also mean we will have to taint the racial purity of our workplace with undesireables.

That is so ******* stupid.

A friend of mine worked in a department with all Asians. He wanted to move into another department after a few years, but he couldn't for some sort of weird admin, HR stuff that he didn't understand and nobody would explain to him. I told him his group probably just hired him in the first place because they had to maintain at least one ginger among the Asians. He laughed.

GF, this is what it's like in the real world. If you progress in your field or any field, there will be much more headache and grief and to deal with. As Piob suggests, find a way to compartmentalize - it's a must. Good luck!

It sounds to me like there is a much deeper issue in your company as to how, who, and how much people are allowed to spend. Things are asshole tight around here where I work. Nobody could ever do such a thing there are so many approvals needed to specifically avoid having to deal with people like that.

Holy cow that blows. How did he have a free hand over 7 years, in this economy? This, BTW, is why I value having clean hands in all business dealings. Good luck.

He got away with it for a few reasons. He is well connected to upper management all of which is in Europe. His boss also never questioned anything for years. And, my boss is a borderline pathological liar so he would tell lies to management meanwhile telling us that management was well aware of everything he was doing and they all signed off on his plans. I think he finally got caught in two many conflicting lies. I also think his boss received an ass kicking from finance and he had to start looking into things. when he did......SURPRISE!!!

I am pissed at myself that I am involved in this at all. I am normally the most honest, moral person I know. The expense account issues are trivial $ but I am still mad at myself that I am associated with it.

topcatny, sounds like you're making the right decisions. Good luck!

Thanks JayJay. Things have been positive so far. On top of this a key member of my team resigned on Monday, primarily because of my bosses behavior and management style. I have been updating my bosses boss with how we are planning to cover her workload as well as some other issues that I suspected he was unaware of. He has been helpful and is sharing info with me that he hadn't previously. He told me today not to count on one person I had planned on picking up some of the work that we will have to cover. Apparently this guy is deeply involved in the cover up for my boss and he will be fired very shortly. I figured he wouldn't tell me any of that if I wasn't expected to stick around. I'll rest easy when that is finalized though.

This appears to be a good sign, but don't let your guard down.

thanks everyone for the encouraging words. i actually feel a bit better because I may have been over-reacting to some things at work. also, as dick as this sounds, i'm glad I'm not the only one who deals with **** at work lol.

21 hour days and red eye flights are not good for the mind and soul.

And they don't tell you to keep your stupid platitudes to yourself?

When it's your signature on their paycheque people usually smile and nod no matter what you say to them. Funny how that works.
