It is a silly way to describe people who teach by lecturing rather than by sitting around in a circle and talking about the material that the students were supposed to have read. In education circles, you always hear the admonition "don't be the sage on a stage!" And I'm always like "Shut the hell up, I'm not going to get in a circle with my students and chat about the Critique of Pure Reason
because they will never come within a country mile of understanding it if I do such as that." (Usually the people in education circles do not understand what I have said because it was a full sentence, and not a slogan or buzzword.)
