And I had basketball tonight (tried to cancel, but VIP has told me they really need me to play and can't I just tough it out?), a mountain bike ride tomorrow night (canceling that ****), manual labor Saturday that has to get done, and another soccer game Sunday.

Getting old sucks. It beats the alternative, but still, it sucks.

EDIT: I take sports way too seriously.

I had something similar a few years back and it turned out that I had inflamed the ligaments that attach the ribs to the sternum. The diagnosis became obvious when my uncle/doctor pressed the area around my sternum - dull ache flared up and he said...yup. Pulled something. The prescription was ibuprofen 3 x 4 or 4 x 3, and rest a few days.

Stupid question, but what is ibuprofen 3x4 or 4x3. Four pills thrice a day? Three pills quarce a day?

BTW - If I ever heard someone seriously use the words "thrice" and "quarce" it would be a thing that is pissing me off.

My uncle is a carpet installer and I help out on some of the bigger jobs since I'm usually available. We worked a job this morning for a nice elderly couple. My uncle and I helped the man move most of the furniture in the home, including three beds (one of which was a bunk bed), a massive fridge, drawers, recliners, etc. We also helped tear up some of the old carpet. These are not free services and the couple had elected to do these jobs themselves and avoid the additional fees. But of course, they were old and barely had anything done when we got there, so my uncle and I wound up doing most of the work. My uncle also didn't bill him for some of the supplies used for the job. All in, we were looking at about $150 worth of services at no additional charge.

So we had moved most of the furniture off to the screened-in patio area. The man had placed two of the metal bed frames against one of the mattresses. This is also where one of the rolled up carpets for the last room was. So when my uncle picked up the carpet, one of the poorly placed bed frames fell over and hit the screen, causing a small gash.

The couple later pointed this out and my uncle told them that the procedure for this was to send him a bill. The woman instantly told him it would cost $20 to repair. Fine, even though the gash in the screen was caused by something the man had left in a precarious position. At this point, we were almost finished, so my uncle said, "So if I just give you $20 we'll be square?" The man "jokingly" replied, "Yeah, if you can help me move some of the heavy furniture back...and give me the $20...we'll be squared." And he actually stuck by that, even after "heavy furniture" turned out to be nearly EVERY piece of furniture in the damn house as the old man "helped" by guiding us where to put it.

The real kicker is that they were obviously Christian fanatics, with tons of religious pictures and decorations around. Dude was even wearing some religious t-shirt. So yes, very Christian of him to allow us to do all of these extra services at no extra cost and then actually be petty enough to still accept the $20.

This was totally TL;DR, but ****, people are unbelievable. I'm about as broke as they come and even I would have felt guilty taking that money.

moral being, all people can be cheap, manipulative ass holes. sorry you had to deal with that. its always a bummer when people do things that you end up thinking less of them for.

Yup. Ice it (20 minutes on, no longer!) and take either that schedule of ibuprofen or 2x Alleve (naproxen) twice a day. Then, tomorrow, when you wake up and have your coffee (or warmed Jim Beam - whatever it is you hillbillies do) try and do these two things: -fold your hands together and turn them over so that the tops of your hands are facing you. With your arms straight, reach them straight over head and push your palms up towards the ceiling. Hold if possible. -do both the Cat and Cobra yoga poses (look them up online, they're really easy to do) Report back if any of those moves causes discomfort and what specifically you felt. BTW - what have you been feeding your girlfriend that she bruised your chest? I've heard of "******** bricks", but this is ridiculous.

Yep - the idea is that you max out at 12 pills (200mg each) each day, whether it works better for your schedule to dose 3 or 4 times a day is your call.

Good luck recuperating.

Far be it for me to pass any judgment on you or her, but I just thought I'd commiserate and share my experience. Kids are extremely important to me when it comes to marriage, and one of the conditions of my upcoming nuptuals is our intention to have another child. If the rug were pulled on me, I'd also be very upset - it would potentially be a deal-breaker for me. Hope things are going well for you.

I have some older friends (who now have three grown children of their own) who have a "marriage contract" they wrote up in their 20s when they first agreed to marry. It stipulated a few silly little things (always have a united front in front of the kids, never go to bed angry) but also a few big things (they agreed to try to have three kids before marrying). It's a simple one-pager from what I gather, but it has been a "Constitution" of sorts for their relationship. I think it's a pretty cool idea.

One other final thing - a woman can have a career and children at the same time. I'm not sure what your wife does or how hard she wants to work at it, but my fiancee and I have a two-year-old and although it takes a lot of work and effort from both of us, she is a fantastic mother and has an enriching and rewarding (and quite remunerative) professional life.

Good luck.

Thanks for the kind words.

My wife, like many women, is a complicated person. He mom had a burgeoning career and became a housewife once children came along. As a result, she resents her husband for making her leave her job (they're Indian so there is a lot of cultural pressure to be the good housewife). My wife wants to avoid having this happen to her (because she loves me and want us to be happy). She works in consulting which takes her on the road quite a bit. She wants to work hard, make good money, and advance up the ladder. She believes that if we had children that WE could be good parents, but SHE wouldn't be present enough to live up to her, and more importantly, her family's standards.

I have always told her that it's not important what her family thinks, but what she is happy with. She can't seem to get past that though. I accept that and for now we'll just table the issue until she is ready to talk about it.

If you lived closer to Canada I'd tell you to get some 222's.

Stories like this make me really angry. I completely understand where you are coming from. I once went into a barber and asked him to just take a little off the sides. He told me that he'd have to charge me price of a full haircut. I asked why and he said that if he let people pay him a lesser amount for something less than a full haircut he'd be hassling with people all the time over what was and wasn't a full haircut.

It sounds like your uncle needs to needs to employ such a policy in order to avoid situations like you and he just experienced. If a room isn't completely ready to have carpet removed/installed a furniture moving fee is charged.

my wife worked 3 half time jobs when I met her, she was really driven by her career, as a lecturer and curator. she didn't make very much money, but she loved her job and took a lot of satisfaction and a lot of her personal identity from it. at one point, I was commuting between Israel and India, because she didn't want to give up her job - that little bit prabably cost us a quarter of a million bucks. a year later, she decided to give up her career, because of our son. she's been a house wife, and thrilled to be one, for almost 10 years.

women are complex, and things do change. but the most important thing for your happiness is a happy wife. although, you also have to decide at what point you are willing to write off kids. it does become harder, and less healthy, to have kids after a certain age.

good luck
