I've had my share of bad travel stories but crap, what a rough journey home this time.
Flight from Shanghai to Newark circled about 4 times on account of the weather over EWR before finally touching down. Then we sat on the tarmac for about an hour waiting for a plane to clear the gate we were intended for. Finally, after about an hour of this nonsense (it's like 2 inches of slush, people) they have the good sense to direct us to another gate.
In the meantime, I've checked my phone and my flight home to BWI is already cancelled. (last time I flew this route they cancelled my flight home as well - something about EWR just doesn't agree with me.) No problem, I'm thinking, I'll just hop onto Amtrak. At least this time, unlike last time, I had the good sense to check flights first before re-checking my bag after customs, so I didn't have to wait 2 hours to get my damned bag back.
Trudge over to the train and buy 2 tickets (travelling with a colleague). There is no status shown in the train station, but checking my phone I see our 8:23 train is delayed by about 45 minutes. Checking again and again over the subsequent hour, I see they're just pushing it back further and further. There's no end in sight. They're mentioning signal problems in NYC so I figure no trains are getting out and heading south.
I make the executive decision to bail and reserve a rental car. Back onto the EWR terminal train to the Hertz counter, pick up a car, and drive down the turnpike on a cold and rainy night. Just finally got home, where, happily, it is warm and dry and my family is sleeping soundly and I can finally take the crap I've been holding onto for like 12 hours.
No more EWR for me, if I can at all avoid it.
