Though I am a freely admitted and ardent supporter of AE, I do not understand the reasoning behind using inelegant lasts for this exotic and beautiful skin.
It begs the question, and keeping in mind that the C.E.O. of AE does read forum input, I ask the question:
On which AE last (or shoe model) would YOU purchase a pair in gator?
I feel gator would work well on the Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Dalton boot (if it were a plain toe balmoral), or the older now-discontinued Taunton chelsea boot.

Presidio, Parkland, McGraw... loafers in general.

I hate to be a smart ass but you do realize that Kenilworth (gator shoe), Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue are all built on the same last. The last # 5.

Honestly I think this is a smart move on the part of AE, they have realized there is a market among their existing customers for gator shoes and AE is bringing those products to marketplace. Personally I would not buy those.

I recall AE having gator on a few shoes several years ago that looked awesome. These do not.

I hope the introduction of alligator shoes is a sign that AE is doing well business wise.

It's a great company and I hope it stays around for a long long time, manufacturing in the USA.

As for those that lambast these shoes, not everyone like the pointy toe fashion items. The AE lasts are classic looking and will far outlast your fashion of the moment items.

But not the same styling. The Kenilworth is a blucher (open lacing). My preference would be a Balmoral or Chelsea or if it has to be a blucher then a sleek chukka would be nicer. smile.gif

Kenilworth is a nice looking traditional and ever-loved style and looks fine in calf or shell.

It is only my personal preference that croco or gator deserves a sleek last, possibly because, at least to my eye, a sleeker last reminisces the animals head shape. Now I'll admit I haven't seen these gator Kenilworth's in person so I may just warm to them yet but for the time being, these are my thoughts on it. Maybe I am wrong.

It's good that AE is trying new things, but honestly, I would look to other brands if I was willing to drop the cash for gator / croc. Those Tom Ford croc loafers looked like pure magic... icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

big negative on the AE

I just don't like how incredibly round and shapeless the quarters are (although I do like how they curve down to meet right where the heel starts). This EG has a much nicer design
