I know this is a rather personal question but I don't feel appropriate or comfortable discussing it with my colleagues and all my good friends are all back in Philly. I travel a lot for work which affects my eating habits and I think contributes to a problem with constipation I have been having recently. I have tried adding a granola bar as a late morning snack but it hasn't helped much. I was hoping other members had some solutions that worked for them or at least feel comforted that I am not alone with this problem.

If this is a long term problem, I would seriously urge you to talk to a doctor about it. Don't keep all this bottled up inside *snigger*
But seriously, increase your fibre intake, eat more things like lentils, legumes and beans and whole wheat bread, reduce your rice intake (especially polished rice). Carob syrup mixed with some water is an especially potent and natural "bowel Drano" (don't know if you can find it anywhere in the USA though). Carob products like powder and "carob chocolate" may help but I don't know if they are as effective.

oh, boy, I know what you mean. when I travel I end up eating high protien high fat stuff and end up bottled up pretty well, part of the time.
best thing is take a plastic bottle of soemthingn like flax seed, that tastes ok and disolves well in juice. before bed take a cup of juice mixed with the stuff.

Thank you for these recommendations. I drink about 5-6 diet Pepsi's a day does that work the same as water or is it somehow worse for constipation?
I worry about things like the flax seed oil and carob syrup making me run to the bathroom in the middle of a meeting if you know what I mean. That's why I haven't tried something like Exlax yet.

Diet Pepsi is mostly water, and therefore does hydrate you.
Eat a whole wheat bagel in the morning with a glass of skim milk.
If your really bottled up, try a semi-fast from morning until 6pm. During the day eat some SMALL fruit (an apple at 11am, 1pm, another at 3pm) and keep the water going like crazy (try to get a gallon down). Snack on some almonds if you need to, but VERY LITTLE (like 10 unsalted max) and seperate from the fruit meals. Oh, when you get to dinner you might eat a lot, but, that's okay. I recommend actually doing this for two days, saturday and sunday. I know it sounds nuts, but, it works for me. I find that really helps detox me from all kinds of problems. Might work for you? Please don't use Exlax or something until you try this, and pllleeasse let me know if it works for you!

There are other products to help you, but they may have side effects:

A couple of things to add to your diet that REALLY help: dried fruit !!! (this one is easy because they come pre-packaged and have tons of fiber, take prunes for example) salad - just have one on the side! wasa - 2gr of fiber per slice and delicious brown rice - probably not the best advice considering you mentioned how much you travel espresso - a quick solution green or herbal tea - good alternative to water take time to relax, it's important don't stress out about being constipated!

Eliminating beef will help a lot. Something about those cows just stops the traffic flow.
Use Metamucil or Citrucel powder when you're home and capsules/tablets on the road. It's just pure fiber. Use that 2-3 times a week and you won't have to worry so much about finding the right food everywhere you go.

Any reason why you're deciding to up your Diet Pepsi intake instead of upping your water intake? Sure, DP is 99.9% water... but do you really want the other 0.1% inside of you?
My advice... bulk up on your fibre. Skip the lumberjack breakfasts, and kiddie cereals. Try the Kashi stuff, Weetabix, Fibre 1, Bran Flakes, whatever! And then top that off with two tbsp of bran or *ground* flax...
I take in about 10-15 g of fibre each morning, and never get the runs afterwards. Ease into it though... once your body gets use to it, and you learn to control things.. you can start each day the Bandwagonesque way... with a large, healthy BM.

Are you serious about *increasing* diet Pepsi? That is nuts man, soda is so bad for you, take it from someone who used to down 6-12 mountain dews a day pulling all nighters. I now drink maybe 1 every 1-3 days, which is tolerable. Soda contains water but it definitely dehydrates you.
If you want to not be constipated you need to cut down on processed foods, which is very hard to do in this day and age. Drinks lots of water, 8 x 8oz glasses minimum. Instead of white rice, go with whole brown rice. Up your fiber, you need 20-30g a day. Eat a bowl of kashi or some other high fiber cereal. Eat some raw fruits and vegetables.
I am extremely constipated right now and it is kind of scary, I'm just starting to take colon health seriously. I just ordered some of this last week http://www.drnatura.com/colonix_program.php and can't wait to try it out. I am hoping to lose 5-10lbs just from getting all that shit out of my system.
Last year, I had some seriously bad farts that you could almost literally cut with a knife. I got a colonic and it made it all go away, no gas problems whatsoever. Don't go overboard with the colonics or enemas (1-2x a year max) as it will impede your natural peristaltic muscles in the instestines. Also, don't use liquid laxatives either, your body will become dependent on them and some other nasty things will start to occur.
There are no shortcuts really. If metamucil works for you, then great, if it doesn't, you can try some more water soluble fiber like that found in flax.
