For prom, I need help matching my outfit to my date's dress.

She's wearing an off white dress with gold and silver accents.

I'm wearing a slim fit black suit (yes, black) with...well, I'm not sure. I love the casual look of a gingham shirt and have sort-of had my heart set on wearing one, but I'm finding a black suit would require a black shirt since her dress doesn't have purple, pink, blue, red, etc. in it. Matching a tie to a black gingham shirt is an absolute pain.

Would this tie match a black/white gingham shirt: http://sunrise-outlet.hostedbyamazo...froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle

I'm open to any suggestions!

TL;DR - Need to match a tie with a black gingham shirt and off-white/gold/silver dress

Thanks!

(Sorry if this is in the wrong area. Mods, feel free to move if so)

Easiest would be a solid colored tie in gold, silver, or black. Maybe a tonal pattern. Next easiest would be a checked tie in a pattern distinctly larger than the gingham check of the shirt. Toughest would be a patterned tie other than a check, since you would have to get the scale right so it wouldn't clash with the pattern of the shirt (the tie you linked might be OK). Patterned ties should include the gold or silver of your date's dress and otherwise be neutral.

Rocket scientists on the forum might have more creative and better ideas.

My initial thought was a solid gold skinny tie over the black/white gingham, but I thought that it looked a little off. I'm not so sure now (panicky indecisiveness setting in).

I like the neutral tie with the pocket square for accent/matching. Would a solid black tie over the gingham be too much black? Then I'd throw in a gold pocket square to somewhat match.

I guess I'm hesitant to wear a plain white shirt because most of the evening I'll be without my jacket and a white shirt with black pants and whatever tie seems bland to me. I like to shake things up a bit while still matching, of course.

Thanks for the replies though!

Have you considered an Eric Glennie?

I've never looked at those Eric Glennie ties before. Certainly interesting, although not the look I'm going for for prom. Definitely going to save it mentally for a future occasion though.

Here's an example of a solid gold tie I'd be looking at (following a 3 second Google search):

I feel like this would look odd over a black/white gingham, but I'd be interested in other opinions for sure.

Sorry for the multitude of questions, I appreciate any and all help I can get.

Sorry but that sounds ghastly. A striped tie with a gingham shirt is a similarly terrible idea.

I love gingham shirts too and I have a couple, but I'm yet to find a tie that looks good with them other than plain navy, either silk or a wool knit. I don't like the idea of a black/white gingham shirt. If you absolutely must wear a black/white gingham shirt then I guess a solid black tie is the least worst alternative.

Really what you should do is go with Spoo's recommendation. He knows what he's talking about :worship2:

Appreciate the honesty. Okay, so I may be willing to venture outside of the gingham despite absolutely loving it. I agree the black/white gingham isn't very flexible or appealing (it'd be wonderful if I could wear another color, but I can't...).

What are your opinions on bankers collars/contrast collars? I would rather not settle on a plain white shirt, although I may have to. I particularly like white shirts with black collars. Then I could go with a gold tie? (Probably gold paisley if I'm not dealing with gingham anymore.)

Once again, thanks for the opinions. It's fantastic having a soundboard for ideas.

You don't have to match. If the matching is too obvious, it looks tacky. If it's subtle and done well, whatever, but subtlety in dress is something guys your age usually fail at, no offense. I was one of 'em.

You could also wear wear a checked shirt, if you like gingham. Wider, more open lines, but still an interesting pattern. You could also wear a striped shirt.

And dear lord, no contrast collar shirts. Subtle patterns with white collars are at least bearable, but a black collar on a white shirt would be trashy as hell.

So after the gingham thing, your new idea is a white shirt with a black collar and a gold paisley tie? Just...wow.

again. listen to spoo.

+1 on the white shirt. You will then have lots of options for the tie, and most will look good. Black suit with gingham shirt is just not going to go well.
