My 52 liner is too small for my 52 short parka.

That's strange. My 50 down liner fits inside my 50 snow parka perfectly. Maybe it runs slimmer than the parka, though.

Sounds like your jacket was too small even without the liner.

Anyway, based on measurements at End and my experiences, it seems that some jackets (like the M65) have pretty narrow chest and others (like the fishtail parka) have plenty of room there. So it would make sense (at least in my mind) that for slimmer jackets the liners in same size fits nicely, and for roomier jackets you might want to size up a little, depending how the jacket fits without the liner. That's of course just my opinion and I have only first hand experience with fishtail parka and +2 sizes bigger liner.

all very odd with the liners.

have the parka and the field both in 52 with a single winter liner that fits and is used with both. granted the parka is roomier compared to the field but have no problems fitting the liner.

edit.

should have mentioned that the winter liner is size 52.

Same here, 50 field jacket and 50 liner, no problems fitting liner to jacket.
