I prefer a hood, frankly. The only umbrella that I've never lost or broken is my SAB, which stays by the door mainly for dealing with touts and tradesmen.
Swaine Adeney Brigg? I guess it is cheaper to buy a bat for that purpose.
While small umbrella's are practical in a way they are very compact, they are usually not very practical against winds, since they are not very sturdy.
Also they don't look very elegant either. However it's all depends on what you are looking for.

I'm not a fan of small umbrellas, but for travel by plane, they come in handy.
Raining doesn’t necessary mean pouring. So, umbrella is enough for most cases. Anyway, I don’t believe Swims looks stylish whatever color they are.
Would rather wear Swims than get my expensive leather sole shoes wet! Anyway, I'm not a big believer in everything matching, only shoes, belt, watch strap.

You said it. My current umbrella was sort of killed suffering from the excruciating pain by the hand of a strong wind. I didn't know a sturdiness depends on the size, though.

I'm seriously thinking of buying a big umbrella after this thread. It's definitely more elegant, yet it is a real drag to always check the weather forecast. Now I don't have to follow the weather forecast since the small umbrella is always in my bag. It can't be the same case with the big one.

Are they transparent? I assume it is better to put the transparent Swims on so that people could still see your shoes.

I have a quality compact khaki colored umbrella that is always in my bag. I find the khaki complements whatever color profile I happen to be wearing.
As a student, I do a lot of walking around campus at all hours and tend to get caught in the rain despite what the forecast says. I'm also a fairly small guy, so a smaller umbrella is probably more proportional.

I keep it pretty simple: black brolly with suits; navy brolly for anything else. Not a hard and fast rule, but in the absence of thought, that's what I tend to do. There's also a little black collapsible in the car in case I get caught out by the forecast.
