Does anyone have experiences queuing at the IRS tax offices?

This year I have to file a US tax return and get a federal taxpayer identification (since I have no SSN). I was told by the firm doing my taxes to show up at an IRS tax office, get the ID and file the return. I'm trying to figure out how long this would take since I've never been to one. Is it akin to getting a visa? (2 or 3 hours?)

The good thing is the company helped me get an extension till October so I can do it after the tax deadline day, which hopefully will make it a less trying affair.

Is there some reason you wouldn't do this online?

I wasn't even aware the IRS had office hours. I can only imagine it's akin to the 8th circle of hell, fifth ring, where everyone is boiling in oil for all eternity singing out lamentations for their lives of evil.

The fact that I need to get the federal taxpayer identification number meant I had to show up in person. Perhaps it's only for this year.

But you are confirming my worse suspicions that I could be there for the better part of the work day. I had thought of doing a half day and then go to one of these offices before getting on the plane to go home, but it would be tight.

Three and a half hours sitting there in queue with a number. I finished after five minutes. I had one bloke snoring behind me, a crazy lady who asked where people were from every 30 minutes and some screaming babies. Security kept screaming at you to put your mobile away. And I didn't know I had to do a TSA style strip down to get in. No food or drink too. Ran to the nearest hotel for a drink afterwards.

Sounds like you were in hell. Glad you made it out in one piece.
