I like my phone and computer but hate that tech support people are called geniuses. Am I alone?

if you see a ugly, fat piece of shit somewhere in the store (which is bound to happen since this is an apple store), just point over and say its me.

My decrease volume button is not working now.

No go.

"Hi, what's the problem?"

"Upgraded to the new OS and Wi-Fi is greyed out."

"Never heard of that."

"Really? There's a 200 page long thread in apple support with thousands having the same problem."

"Sounds like it could be a hardware issue."

"It's your hardware."

"Perhaps you did something to the phone."

"Are you suggesting I magically affected thousands of phones simultaneously?"

"Well, no. Maybe it's a software problem."

"Again, your software."

"Right, let's try a hard resta--"

"Did that, as well as a complete restore as my phone and as a new phone. Shut down everything else, restarted my router. Nothing."

"Well that's everything I would try."

"Maybe if we both stare at it really hard."

"The phone is out of warranty, but the good news is that we can fix this for you by replacing the Wi-Fi antenna for $149."

"You sent me software that doesn't work with the hardware you sold me and your offer is to charge me $149 for a fix on what is at best a $50 phone? And in fact, being offered for free on your website if I sign up for a service plan."

beat

"Yes."

I'm too invested in mac to just dump the bloody things. Anyone know the idiots guide to restoring iOS 5 or an earlier 6? Like to sell this with a working Wi-Fi.

We need to update the title of this thread from "Hold Pio's hand" to "Hold Lefty's (Left) Hand"

Was that at the genius bar? Holy hell. I'd call up Apple Care and relay that story.

http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/18/downgrade-ios-6-beta-to-ios-5/

don't know if you'll be able to swing it with a non-beta.
Sounds like a phone call to me based on the "sounds like" instead of them actually inspecting the hardware in the story. If I am correct in this, I would recommend going to the store and talking to someone face to face.

I doubt this is beta. It crapped out the other day for no reason. I believe I was running the version prior to 6.1.2. Once the wifi was lost I restored and upgraded to the the new os.

Apparently I can't do it as I didn't save my SHSH blobs.

Quote:
How to Save SHSH blobs Using TinyUmbrella – What is SHSH blob? IOS users can update their devices easily but Apple doesn’t allow downgrading. So, in order to downgrade, SHSH blob is used. It is a signature file which is used against Apple server to fool it. So, that iTunes think that it is connecting with Apple Server but in real it is connecting with Cydia Server which verifies the iOS files, hence, users will be able to downgrade to previous version.

Had he opened up the phone I'm sure he would have said "it's been wet" (I dropped it in a river and replaced the battery) and blamed that. I was ready to buy a new one, but figured I could at least grab a $150+ for this one. Or I could save this for a music player.

Looks like Google Now is coming to iOS.

Interesting that Google would make this move as it's one of Android's killer features. I am guessing that the company values the additional data they will gain from the users who install and use this app for the purpose of ads over any possible sale advantage it would give their own platform.

I had to get rid of Mailbox. Its constant push was KILLING my battery life. Back to Sparrow for now.

Why not just use the official GMAIL app? It's excellent.
