I was using the Speck case for my 4s, but I've just removed it and am carrying it without a case. My hope is that I'll break it so I can justify buying the 5.

Looks like Apple is tightening up quality control down the line. This means we may see less scratch prone iPhones in the future.

I wonder how something like this would work. My understanding is any scuffing issues that people may be seeing are along the sides of the phone. I don't think I have seen anyone show that they have had issues with the front and back. So wouldn't a product like this protect your iPhone while maintaining the overall looks? Certainly looks better then the old "Bumpers" from Apple did and might be a good compromise for those who wanted to go natural, sans case, this time.

I do question any shock absorption it may provide, but like the idea as a trade-off. Thoughts?

I only buy directly through Apple and am considering Apple Care Plus this time. It covers breaks and such.

Also keep in mind that Apple has a great iPhone replacement program. This extends to people out of warranty. If you ever break your iPhone they will replace it at an Apple store for $125. This is valid to people, no matter how you damaged the handset. They will swap it out for a new phone and it does NOT extend you contract. I had water damage to my iPhone 4 about 9 months ago and did this. Painless process.

I have had mine since release without a case and I have had no issues with scratches.

It really sounds like the scratch issue is hit or miss. Not everyone is having it. Must be some bad quality control with a portion of the production run.

I don't know, I think people are just used to tossing their phones around. I have been very careful with mine since I got it.
