But it's a legit question whether it was premeditation to kill or premeditation to defend himself. I don't know, and haven't followed it as close as Z's case.

I suppose. One difference though is that premeditation involves subjective intent, whereas self-defense involves objective reasonableness.

Self-defense also involves subjective intent. Not that that matters, though.

I am still hung up on those answers to the jury questions, especially the last one.

No, in that jurisdiction self defense is premised on subjective reasonableness.
