I felt disappointing when I learned the truth about the first one. I had read some articles about her about how she just fired a warning shot, etc. When I learned she actually left the scene and returned and the shot just missed because she's a bad aim, I lost all faith in the credibility of all journalism.

You can get a PhD from the Universal Life Church for $10. I'm not impressed.

I don't think she should have gotten 20 years. You can pin that one on the insanity of mandatory minimums for gun crimes, not the racists. She didn't exactly help herself out by finding her husband and beating him up while she was out on bail, though. The reporting has been total propaganda and half-truth, and the people who are angry at the Zimmerman trial and "Stand Your Ground" haven't even bothered to look into it. In fact, if you ask them to they get really huffy.

Same deal with the Dooley trial. Kind of a weird case, but there are three witnesses who all agree that he pulled the gun first and that the guy who died was trying to take it from him when he was killed. But people are just taking his testimony at face value and screaming racism (which is something that he did at the trial). And the McDonald case up there was a plea bargain. Reading the story on wiki I would have advised her to take it to trial, but she and her lawyer probably know more about it than I do and decided that 41 months was a good deal based on all of the facts.

Ataturk posted some objective stats yesterday showing that self defense and SYG are used quite often by non-whites and to roughly the same success rate. I'm quite sure this will be ignored by the social justice squad.

Imagine that, DUers believe the self-serving testimony of black defendants but reject out of hand any statements from the white-Hispanic.

Particularly since so much of the whitespanic's(new word, use it until it catches on) testimony was basically uncontroverted. It's not just rejecting the testimony, it's saying that the contents of your imagination trump testimony and evidence.

Another thing about the McDonald case in that graphic: she wasn't "chased" into the street by "neo nazis". The victim pulled her off of someone else, and they both walked into the street. The injuries to her face were basically what started the fight, when someone (not the actual victim) hit her with a glass. Based on the wiki, I still think she would have been better off going to trial, but there's bound to be shit I don't know that would have come out at trial.

I can't go anywhere without people following me, hounding me, forcing themselves upon me sexually, with creepy-ass crackas wanna-be raping me.

I am Trayvon Martin.

The NYTimes Public Editor talks about their coverage.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/14/public-editor/making-sense-of-a-sensational-case.html

"We did such a great job on our reporting in the end, just look at the type of stories we did!"

She doesn't really acknowledge the bigger and more troubling concerns (in fact she doesn't at all) but otherwise, its kind of clear that this is a story that really resonated with how journalists are socialized.

I am not Trayvon, but I have attended a lot of diversity seminars…

I am a white, 51 year old lesbian with no children. My parents were poor and never able to attend college. They encouraged me to become educated to better my chances at a good life. Even though I grew up in a rural area, I was able to go to college in large cities and work my way up to a Ph.D. Now I have a great resume, a cool convertible and two nice houses. The American Dream worked for me. I have always known that my race helped me get a leg up, especially since I am from a lower class and gay. I “made it" in a major corporation, where very few white women and little to no people of color are ever hired in leadership positions. I have sat on hiring committees there and heard senior leaders excuse their majority-whiteness by blaming a “lack of good candidates of color". I have sat through many diversity seminars, where the facilitator puts the one or two people of color there on the spot, as if race/ethnicity is something they alone bring to the group. In my personal life, I have sat quietly by while my brother and his family have ridiculed President Obama, other African Americans and Latinos they do not even know. I am ashamed that my only protest has been never going home to visit very much. Ironically, I take after my father’s side of our family—being olive-skinned and black haired. All my life people have asked me “where are you from" and I know that is code to let me know they think my coloring is outside the norm. I am aware that many different kinds of prejudice and racism exist in this world, but white supremacy is the one I know best. I am sick and tired of other white people saying there is no such thing. They are either lying or delusional—cowering in fear that the tables will be turned one day, and what they have “done unto others" will be done to them.

Did they charge you higher rates because you're black?

INORITE? They remind me of MC Serch's character in "Bamboozled" -- "KILL ME TOO!!"

Sadly, I know a few people who use this language. For all their talk about "seeing people as people, not as colours/genders/etc.", they loooooove to put themselves in little boxes to help their fellow travellers figure out their social location.

Outback and separate rooms for jurors?!?!?? They even let the jurors go to a movie and watch 4th of July fireworks. Government waste has led to Zimmerman getting off.
